To the chief Musician on Neginoth, Maschil, [A Psalm] of David. Give ear to my prayer, O God; and hide not thyself from my supplication. 1 Listen to my prayer, O God, do not ignore my plea;
Attend to me, and hear me: I mourn in my complaint, and make a noise; 2 hear me and answer me. My thoughts trouble me and I am distraught
Because of the voice of the enemy, because of the oppression of the wicked: for they cast iniquity upon me, and in wrath they hate me. 3 at the voice of the enemy, at the stares of the wicked; for they bring down suffering upon me and revile me in their anger.
My heart is severely pained within me: and the terrors of death have fallen upon me. 4 My heart is in anguish within me; the terrors of death assail me.
Fearfulness and trembling have come upon me, and horror hath overwhelmed me. 5 Fear and trembling have beset me; horror has overwhelmed me.
And I said, O that I had wings like a dove! [for then] I would fly away, and be at rest. 6 I said, "Oh, that I had the wings of a dove! I would fly away and be at rest--
Lo, [then] I would wander far off, [and] remain in the wilderness. Selah. 7 I would flee far away and stay in the desert; "Selah"
I would hasten my escape from the windy storm [and] tempest. 8 I would hurry to my place of shelter, far from the tempest and storm."
Destroy, O Lord, [and] divide their tongues: for I have seen violence and strife in the city. 9 Confuse the wicked, O Lord, confound their speech, for I see violence and strife in the city.
Day and night they go about it upon its walls: mischief also and sorrow [are] in the midst of it. 10 Day and night they prowl about on its walls; malice and abuse are within it.
Wickedness [is] in the midst of it: deceit and guile depart not from her streets. 11 Destructive forces are at work in the city; threats and lies never leave its streets.
For [it was] not an enemy [that] reproached me; then I could have borne [it]: neither [was it] he that hated me [that] magnified [himself] against me; then I would have hid myself from him: 12 If an enemy were insulting me, I could endure it; if a foe were raising himself against me, I could hide from him.
But [it was] thou, a man my equal, my guide, and my acquaintance. 13 But it is you, a man like myself, my companion, my close friend,
We took sweet counsel together, [and] walked to the house of God in company. 14 with whom I once enjoyed sweet fellowship as we walked with the throng at the house of God.
Let death seize upon them, [and] let them go down quick into hell: for wickedness [is] in their dwellings, [and] among them. 15 Let death take my enemies by surprise; let them go down alive to the grave, for evil finds lodging among them.
As for me, I will call upon God: and the LORD will save me. 16 But I call to God, and the LORD saves me.
Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray, and cry aloud: and he will hear my voice. 17 Evening, morning and noon I cry out in distress, and he hears my voice.
He hath delivered my soul in peace from the battle [that was] against me: for there were many with me. 18 He ransoms me unharmed from the battle waged against me, even though many oppose me.
God will hear and afflict them, even he that abideth of old. Selah. Because they have no changes, therefore they fear not God. 19 God, who is enthroned forever, will hear them and afflict them-- "Selah" men who never change their ways and have no fear of God.
He hath put forth his hands against such as are at peace with him: he hath broken his covenant. 20 My companion attacks his friends; he violates his covenant.
[The words] of his mouth were smoother than butter, but war [was] in his heart: his words were softer than oil, yet [were] they drawn swords. 21 His speech is smooth as butter, yet war is in his heart; his words are more soothing than oil, yet they are drawn swords.
Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he will sustain thee: he will never suffer the righteous to be moved. 22 Cast your cares on the LORD and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous fall.
But thou, O God, wilt bring them down into the pit of destruction: bloody and deceitful men shall not live out half their days; but I will trust in thee. 23 But you, O God, will bring down the wicked into the pit of corruption; bloodthirsty and deceitful men will not live out half their days. But as for me, I trust in you.
