To the choirmaster: according to Lilies. A Psalm of David. Save me, O God! For the waters have come up to my neck. 1 Save me, O God, for the waters have come up to my neck.
I sink in deep mire, where there is no foothold; I have come into deep waters, and the flood sweeps over me. 2 I sink in the miry depths, where there is no foothold. I have come into the deep waters; the floods engulf me.
I am weary with my crying; my throat is parched. My eyes grow dim with waiting for my God. 3 I am worn out calling for help; my throat is parched. My eyes fail, looking for my God.
More in number than the hairs of my head are those who hate me without cause; mighty are those who would destroy me, those who attack me with lies. What I did not steal must I now restore? 4 Those who hate me without reason outnumber the hairs of my head; many are my enemies without cause, those who seek to destroy me. I am forced to restore what I did not steal.
O God, thou knowest my folly; the wrongs I have done are not hidden from thee. 5 You know my folly, O God; my guilt is not hidden from you.
Let not those who hope in thee be put to shame through me, O Lord GOD of hosts; let not those who seek thee be brought to dishonor through me, O God of Israel. 6 May those who hope in you not be disgraced because of me, O Lord, the LORD Almighty; may those who seek you not be put to shame because of me, O God of Israel.
For it is for thy sake that I have borne reproach, that shame has covered my face. 7 For I endure scorn for your sake, and shame covers my face.
I have become a stranger to my brethren, an alien to my mother's sons. 8 I am a stranger to my brothers, an alien to my own mother's sons;
For zeal for thy house has consumed me, and the insults of those who insult thee have fallen on me. 9 for zeal for your house consumes me, and the insults of those who insult you fall on me.
When I humbled my soul with fasting, it became my reproach. 10 When I weep and fast, I must endure scorn;
When I made sackcloth my clothing, I became a byword to them. 11 when I put on sackcloth, people make sport of me.
I am the talk of those who sit in the gate, and the drunkards make songs about me. 12 Those who sit at the gate mock me, and I am the song of the drunkards.
But as for me, my prayer is to thee, O LORD. At an acceptable time, O God, in the abundance of thy steadfast love answer me. With thy faithful help 13 But I pray to you, O LORD, in the time of your favor; in your great love, O God, answer me with your sure salvation.
rescue me from sinking in the mire; let me be delivered from my enemies and from the deep waters. 14 Rescue me from the mire, do not let me sink; deliver me from those who hate me, from the deep waters.
Let not the flood sweep over me, or the deep swallow me up, or the pit close its mouth over me. 15 Do not let the floodwaters engulf me or the depths swallow me up or the pit close its mouth over me.
Answer me, O LORD, for thy steadfast love is good; according to thy abundant mercy, turn to me. 16 Answer me, O LORD, out of the goodness of your love; in your great mercy turn to me.
Hide not thy face from thy servant; for I am in distress, make haste to answer me. 17 Do not hide your face from your servant; answer me quickly, for I am in trouble.
Draw near to me, redeem me, set me free because of my enemies! 18 Come near and rescue me; redeem me because of my foes.
Thou knowest my reproach, and my shame and my dishonor; my foes are all known to thee. 19 You know how I am scorned, disgraced and shamed; all my enemies are before you.
Insults have broken my heart, so that I am in despair. I looked for pity, but there was none; and for comforters, but I found none. 20 Scorn has broken my heart and has left me helpless; I looked for sympathy, but there was none, for comforters, but I found none.
They gave me poison for food, and for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink. 21 They put gall in my food and gave me vinegar for my thirst.
Let their own table before them become a snare; let their sacrificial feasts be a trap. 22 May the table set before them become a snare; may it become retribution and a trap.
Let their eyes be darkened, so that they cannot see; and make their loins tremble continually. 23 May their eyes be darkened so they cannot see, and their backs be bent forever.
Pour out thy indignation upon them, and let thy burning anger overtake them. 24 Pour out your wrath on them; let your fierce anger overtake them.
May their camp be a desolation, let no one dwell in their tents. 25 May their place be deserted; let there be no one to dwell in their tents.
For they persecute him whom thou hast smitten, and him whom thou hast wounded, they afflict still more. 26 For they persecute those you wound and talk about the pain of those you hurt.
Add to them punishment upon punishment; may they have no acquittal from thee. 27 Charge them with crime upon crime; do not let them share in your salvation.
Let them be blotted out of the book of the living; let them not be enrolled among the righteous. 28 May they be blotted out of the book of life and not be listed with the righteous.
But I am afflicted and in pain; let thy salvation, O God, set me on high! 29 I am in pain and distress; may your salvation, O God, protect me.
I will praise the name of God with a song; I will magnify him with thanksgiving. 30 I will praise God's name in song and glorify him with thanksgiving.
This will please the LORD more than an ox or a bull with horns and hoofs. 31 This will please the LORD more than an ox, more than a bull with its horns and hoofs.
Let the oppressed see it and be glad; you who seek God, let your hearts revive. 32 The poor will see and be glad-- you who seek God, may your hearts live!
For the LORD hears the needy, and does not despise his own that are in bonds. 33 The LORD hears the needy and does not despise his captive people.
Let heaven and earth praise him, the seas and everything that moves therein. 34 Let heaven and earth praise him, the seas and all that move in them,
For God will save Zion and rebuild the cities of Judah; and his servants shall dwell there and possess it; 35 for God will save Zion and rebuild the cities of Judah. Then people will settle there and possess it;
the children of his servants shall inherit it, and those who love his name shall dwell in it. 36 the children of his servants will inherit it, and those who love his name will dwell there.
