| 1 (72-1) <A psalm for Asaph.> How good is God to Israel, to them that are of a right heart! | 1 Surely God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart. |
| 2 (72-2) But my feet were almost moved; my steps had well nigh slipped. | 2 But as for me, my feet had almost slipped; I had nearly lost my foothold. |
| 3 (72-3) Because I had a zeal on occasion of the wicked, seeing the prosperity of sinners. | 3 For I envied the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. |
| 4 (72-4) For there is no regard to their death, nor is there strength in their stripes. | 4 They have no struggles; their bodies are healthy and strong. |
| 5 (72-5) They are not in the labour of men: neither shall they be scourged like other men. | 5 They are free from the burdens common to man; they are not plagued by human ills. |
| 6 (72-6) Therefore pride hath held them fast: they are covered with their iniquity and their wickedness. | 6 Therefore pride is their necklace; they clothe themselves with violence. |
| 7 (72-7) Their iniquity hath come forth, as it were from fatness: they have passed into the affection of the heart. | 7 From their callous hearts comes iniquity; the evil conceits of their minds know no limits. |
| 8 (72-8) They have thought and spoken wickedness: they have spoken iniquity on high. | 8 They scoff, and speak with malice; in their arrogance they threaten oppression. |
| 9 (72-9) They have set their mouth against heaven: and their tongue hath passed through the earth. | 9 Their mouths lay claim to heaven, and their tongues take possession of the earth. |
| 10 (72-10) Therefore will my people return here and full days shall be found in them. | 10 Therefore their people turn to them and drink up waters in abundance. |
| 11 (72-11) And they said: How doth God know? and is there knowledge in the most High? | 11 They say, "How can God know? Does the Most High have knowledge?" |
| 12 (72-12) Behold these are sinners; and yet, abounding in the world they have obtained riches. | 12 This is what the wicked are like-- always carefree, they increase in wealth. |
| 13 (72-13) And I said: Then have I in vain justified my heart, and washed my hands among the innocent. | 13 Surely in vain have I kept my heart pure; in vain have I washed my hands in innocence. |
| 14 (72-14) And I have been scourged all the day; and my chastisement hath been in the mornings. | 14 All day long I have been plagued; I have been punished every morning. |
| 15 (72-15) If I said: I will speak thus; behold I should condemn the generation of thy children. | 15 If I had said, "I will speak thus," I would have betrayed your children. |
| 16 (72-16) I studied that I might know this thing, it is a labour in my sight: | 16 When I tried to understand all this, it was oppressive to me |
| 17 (72-17) Until I go into the sanctuary of God, and understand concerning their last ends. | 17 till I entered the sanctuary of God; then I understood their final destiny. |
| 18 (72-18) But indeed for deceits thou hast put it to them: when they were lifted up thou hast cast them down. | 18 Surely you place them on slippery ground; you cast them down to ruin. |
| 19 (72-19) How are they brought to desolation? they have suddenly ceased to be: they have perished by reason of their iniquity. | 19 How suddenly are they destroyed, completely swept away by terrors! |
| 20 (72-20) As the dream of them that awake, O Lord; so in thy city thou shalt bring their image to nothing. | 20 As a dream when one awakes, so when you arise, O Lord, you will despise them as fantasies. |
| 21 (72-21) For my heart hath been inflamed, and my reins have been changed: | 21 When my heart was grieved and my spirit embittered, |
| 22 (72-22) And I am brought to nothing, and I knew not. | 22 I was senseless and ignorant; I was a brute beast before you. |
| 23 (72-23) I am become as a beast before thee: and I am always with thee. | 23 Yet I am always with you; you hold me by my right hand. |
| 24 (72-24) Thou hast held me by my right hand; and by thy will thou hast conducted me, and with thy glory thou hast received me. | 24 You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will take me into glory. |
| 25 (72-25) For what have I in heaven? and besides thee what do I desire upon earth? | 25 Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you. |
| 26 (72-26) For thee my flesh and my heart hath fainted away: thou art the God of my heart, and the God that is my portion for ever. | 26 My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. |
| 27 (72-27) For behold they that go far from thee shall perish: thou hast destroyed all them that are disloyal to thee. | 27 Those who are far from you will perish; you destroy all who are unfaithful to you. |
| 28 (72-28) But it is good for me to adhere to my God, to put my hope in the Lord God: That I may declare all thy praises, in the gates of the daughter of Sion. | 28 But as for me, it is good to be near God. I have made the Sovereign LORD my refuge; I will tell of all your deeds. |
