| 1 A Song [or] Psalm for the sons of Korah, to the chief Musician upon Mahalath Leannoth, Maschil of Heman the Ezrahite. O LORD God of my salvation, I have cried day [and] night before thee: | 1 O LORD, the God who saves me, day and night I cry out before you. |
| 2 Let my prayer come before thee: incline thy ear to my cry; | 2 May my prayer come before you; turn your ear to my cry. |
| 3 For my soul is full of troubles: and my life draweth nigh to the grave. | 3 For my soul is full of trouble and my life draws near the grave. |
| 4 I am counted with them that go down into the pit: I am as a man [that hath] no strength: | 4 I am counted among those who go down to the pit; I am like a man without strength. |
| 5 Free among the dead, like the slain that lie in the grave, whom thou rememberest no more: and they are cut off from thy hand. | 5 I am set apart with the dead, like the slain who lie in the grave, whom you remember no more, who are cut off from your care. |
| 6 Thou hast laid me in the lowest pit, in darkness, in the deeps. | 6 You have put me in the lowest pit, in the darkest depths. |
| 7 Thy wrath lieth hard upon me, and thou hast afflicted [me] with all thy waves. Selah. | 7 Your wrath lies heavily upon me; you have overwhelmed me with all your waves. "Selah" |
| 8 Thou hast put away my acquaintance far from me; thou hast made me an abomination to them: [I am] shut up, and I cannot come forth. | 8 You have taken from me my closest friends and have made me repulsive to them. I am confined and cannot escape; |
| 9 My eye mourneth by reason of affliction: LORD, I have called daily upon thee, I have stretched out my hands to thee. | 9 my eyes are dim with grief. I call to you, O LORD, every day; I spread out my hands to you. |
| 10 Wilt thou show wonders to the dead? shall the dead arise [and] praise thee? Selah. | 10 Do you show your wonders to the dead? Do those who are dead rise up and praise you? "Selah" |
| 11 Shall thy loving-kindness be declared in the grave? [or] thy faithfulness in destruction? | 11 Is your love declared in the grave, your faithfulness in Destruction ? |
| 12 Shall thy wonders be known in the dark? and thy righteousness in the land of forgetfulness? | 12 Are your wonders known in the place of darkness, or your righteous deeds in the land of oblivion? |
| 13 But to thee have I cried, O LORD; and in the morning shall my prayer come before thee. | 13 But I cry to you for help, O LORD; in the morning my prayer comes before you. |
| 14 LORD, why castest thou off my soul? [why] hidest thou thy face from me? | 14 Why, O LORD, do you reject me and hide your face from me? |
| 15 I [am] afflicted and ready to die from [my] youth up: [while] I suffer thy terrors I am distracted. | 15 From my youth I have been afflicted and close to death; I have suffered your terrors and am in despair. |
| 16 Thy fierce wrath goeth over me; thy terrors have cut me off. | 16 Your wrath has swept over me; your terrors have destroyed me. |
| 17 They came around me daily like water; they encompassed me together. | 17 All day long they surround me like a flood; they have completely engulfed me. |
| 18 Lover and friend hast thou put far from me, [and] my acquaintance into darkness. | 18 You have taken my companions and loved ones from me; the darkness is my closest friend. |
