| 1 (88-1) <Of understanding, for Ethan the Ezrahite.> (88-2) The mercies of the Lord I will sing for ever. I will shew forth thy truth with my mouth to generation and generation. | 1 I will sing of the LORD's great love forever; with my mouth I will make your faithfulness known through all generations. |
| 2 (88-3) For thou hast said: Mercy shall be built up for ever in the heavens: thy truth shall be prepared in them. | 2 I will declare that your love stands firm forever, that you established your faithfulness in heaven itself. |
| 3 (88-4) I have made a covenant with my elect: I have sworn to David my servant: | 3 You said, "I have made a covenant with my chosen one, I have sworn to David my servant, |
| 4 (88-5) Thy seed will I settle for ever. And I will build up thy throne unto generation and generation. | 4 'I will establish your line forever and make your throne firm through all generations.' " "Selah" |
| 5 (88-6) The heavens shall confess thy wonders, O Lord: and thy truth in the church of the saints. | 5 The heavens praise your wonders, O LORD, your faithfulness too, in the assembly of the holy ones. |
| 6 (88-7) For who in the clouds can be compared to the Lord: or who among the sons of God shall be like to God? | 6 For who in the skies above can compare with the LORD? Who is like the LORD among the heavenly beings? |
| 7 (88-8) God, who is glorified in the assembly of the saints: great and terrible above all them that are about him. | 7 In the council of the holy ones God is greatly feared; he is more awesome than all who surround him. |
| 8 (88-9) O Lord God of hosts, who is like to thee? thou art mighty, O Lord, and thy truth is round about thee. | 8 O LORD God Almighty, who is like you? You are mighty, O LORD, and your faithfulness surrounds you. |
| 9 (88-10) Thou rulest the power of the sea: and appeasest the motion of the waves thereof. | 9 You rule over the surging sea; when its waves mount up, you still them. |
| 10 (88-11) Thou hast humbled the proud one, as one that is slain: with the arm of thy strength thou hast scattered thy enemies. | 10 You crushed Rahab like one of the slain; with your strong arm you scattered your enemies. |
| 11 (88-12) Thine are the heavens, and thine is the earth: the world and the fulness thereof thou hast founded: | 11 The heavens are yours, and yours also the earth; you founded the world and all that is in it. |
| 12 (88-13) The north and the sea thou hast created. Thabor and Hermon shall rejoice in thy name: | 12 You created the north and the south; Tabor and Hermon sing for joy at your name. |
| 13 (88-14) Thy arm is with might. Let thy hand be strengthened, and thy right hand exalted: | 13 Your arm is endued with power; your hand is strong, your right hand exalted. |
| 14 (88-15) Justice and judgment are the preparation of thy throne. Mercy and truth shall go before thy face: | 14 Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne; love and faithfulness go before you. |
| 15 (88-16) Blessed is the people that knoweth jubilation. They shall walk, O Lord, in the light of thy countenance: | 15 Blessed are those who have learned to acclaim you, who walk in the light of your presence, O LORD. |
| 16 (88-17) And in thy name they shall rejoice all the day, and in thy justice they shall be exalted. | 16 They rejoice in your name all day long; they exult in your righteousness. |
| 17 (88-18) For thou art the glory of their strength: and in thy good pleasure shall our horn be exalted. | 17 For you are their glory and strength, and by your favor you exalt our horn. |
| 18 (88-19) For our protection is of the Lord, and of our king the holy one of Israel. | 18 Indeed, our shield belongs to the LORD, our king to the Holy One of Israel. |
| 19 (88-20) Then thou spokest in a vision to thy saints, and saidst: I have laid help upon one that is mighty, and have exalted one chosen out of my people. | 19 Once you spoke in a vision, to your faithful people you said: "I have bestowed strength on a warrior; I have exalted a young man from among the people. |
| 20 (88-21) I have found David my servant: with my holy oil I have anointed him. | 20 I have found David my servant; with my sacred oil I have anointed him. |
| 21 (88-22) For my hand shall help him: and my arm shall strengthen him. | 21 My hand will sustain him; surely my arm will strengthen him. |
| 22 (88-23) The enemy shall have no advantage over him: nor the son of iniquity have power to hurt him. | 22 No enemy will subject him to tribute; no wicked man will oppress him. |
| 23 (88-24) And I will cut down his enemies before his face; and them that hate him I will put to flight. | 23 I will crush his foes before him and strike down his adversaries. |
| 24 (88-25) And my truth and my mercy shall be with him: and in my name shall his horn be exalted. | 24 My faithful love will be with him, and through my name his horn will be exalted. |
| 25 (88-26) And I will set his hand in the sea; and his right hand in the rivers. | 25 I will set his hand over the sea, his right hand over the rivers. |
| 26 (88-27) He shall cry out to me: Thou art my father: my God, and the support of my salvation. | 26 He will call out to me, 'You are my Father, my God, the Rock my Savior.' |
| 27 (88-28) And I will make him my firstborn, high above the kings of the earth. | 27 I will also appoint him my firstborn, the most exalted of the kings of the earth. |
| 28 (88-29) I will keep my mercy for him for ever: and my covenant faithful to him. | 28 I will maintain my love to him forever, and my covenant with him will never fail. |
| 29 (88-30) And I will make his seed to endure for evermore: and his throne as the days of heaven. | 29 I will establish his line forever, his throne as long as the heavens endure. |
| 30 (88-31) And if his children forsake my law, and walk not in my judgments: | 30 "If his sons forsake my law and do not follow my statutes, |
| 31 (88-32) If they profane my justices: and keep not my commandments: | 31 if they violate my decrees and fail to keep my commands, |
| 32 (88-33) I will visit their iniquities with a rod and their sins with stripes. | 32 I will punish their sin with the rod, their iniquity with flogging; |
| 33 (88-34) But my mercy I will not take away from him: nor will I suffer my truth to fail. | 33 but I will not take my love from him, nor will I ever betray my faithfulness. |
| 34 (88-35) Neither will I profane my covenant: and the words that proceed from my mouth I will not make void. | 34 I will not violate my covenant or alter what my lips have uttered. |
| 35 (88-36) Once have I sworn by my holiness: I will not lie unto David: | 35 Once for all, I have sworn by my holiness-- and I will not lie to David-- |
| 36 (88-37) His seed shall endure for ever. | 36 that his line will continue forever and his throne endure before me like the sun; |
| 37 (88-38) And his throne as the sun before me: and as the moon perfect for ever, and a faithful witness in heaven. | 37 it will be established forever like the moon, the faithful witness in the sky." "Selah" |
| 38 (88-39) But thou hast rejected and despised: thou hast been angry with my anointed. | 38 But you have rejected, you have spurned, you have been very angry with your anointed one. |
| 39 (88-40) Thou hast overthrown the covenant of thy servant: thou hast profaned his sanctuary on the earth. | 39 You have renounced the covenant with your servant and have defiled his crown in the dust. |
| 40 (88-41) Thou hast broken down all his hedges: thou hast made his strength fear. | 40 You have broken through all his walls and reduced his strongholds to ruins. |
| 41 (88-42) All that pass by the way have robbed him: he is become a reproach to his neighbours. | 41 All who pass by have plundered him; he has become the scorn of his neighbors. |
| 42 (88-43) Thou hast set up the right hand of them that oppress him: thou hast made all his enemies to rejoice. | 42 You have exalted the right hand of his foes; you have made all his enemies rejoice. |
| 43 (88-44) Thou hast turned away the help of his sword; and hast not assisted him in battle. | 43 You have turned back the edge of his sword and have not supported him in battle. |
| 44 (88-45) Thou hast made his purification to cease: and thou hast cast his throne down to the ground. | 44 You have put an end to his splendor and cast his throne to the ground. |
| 45 (88-46) Thou hast shortened the days of his time: thou hast covered him with confusion. | 45 You have cut short the days of his youth; you have covered him with a mantle of shame. "Selah" |
| 46 (88-47) How long, O Lord, turnest thou away unto the end? shall thy anger burn like fire? | 46 How long, O LORD? Will you hide yourself forever? How long will your wrath burn like fire? |
| 47 (88-48) Remember what my substance is: for hast thou made all the children of men in vain? | 47 Remember how fleeting is my life. For what futility you have created all men! |
| 48 (88-49) Who is the man that shall live, and not see death: that shall deliver his soul from the hand of hell? | 48 What man can live and not see death, or save himself from the power of the grave ? "Selah" |
| 49 (88-50) Lord, where are thy ancient mercies, according to what thou didst swear to David in thy truth? | 49 O Lord, where is your former great love, which in your faithfulness you swore to David? |
| 50 (88-51) Be mindful, O Lord, of the reproach of thy servants (which I have held in my bosom) of many nations: | 50 Remember, Lord, how your servant has been mocked, how I bear in my heart the taunts of all the nations, |
| 51 (88-52) Wherewith thy enemies have reproached, O Lord; wherewith they have reproached the change of thy anointed. | 51 the taunts with which your enemies have mocked, O LORD, with which they have mocked every step of your anointed one. |
| 52 (88-53) Blessed be the Lord for evermore. So be it. So be it. | 52 Praise be to the LORD forever! Amen and Amen. |
