New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
Remind your people to submit to the government and its officers. They should be obedient, always ready to do what is good. 1 Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good,
They must not speak evil of anyone, and they must avoid quarreling. Instead, they should be gentle and show true humility to everyone. 2 to slander no one, to be peaceable and considerate, and to show true humility toward all men.
Once we, too, were foolish and disobedient. We were misled by others and became slaves to many wicked desires and evil pleasures. Our lives were full of evil and envy. We hated others, and they hated us. 3 At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another.
But then God our Savior showed us his kindness and love. 4 But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared,
He saved us, not because of the good things we did, but because of his mercy. He washed away our sins and gave us a new life through the Holy Spirit. 5 he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit,
He generously poured out the Spirit upon us because of what Jesus Christ our Savior did. 6 whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior,
He declared us not guilty because of his great kindness. And now we know that we will inherit eternal life. 7 so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life.
These things I have told you are all true. I want you to insist on them so that everyone who trusts in God will be careful to do good deeds all the time. These things are good and beneficial for everyone. 8 This is a trustworthy saying. And I want you to stress these things, so that those who have trusted in God may be careful to devote themselves to doing what is good. These things are excellent and profitable for everyone.
Do not get involved in foolish discussions about spiritual pedigrees or in quarrels and fights about obedience to Jewish laws. These kinds of things are useless and a waste of time. 9 But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and arguments and quarrels about the law, because these are unprofitable and useless.
If anyone is causing divisions among you, give a first and second warning. After that, have nothing more to do with that person. 10 Warn a divisive person once, and then warn him a second time. After that, have nothing to do with him.
For people like that have turned away from the truth. They are sinning, and they condemn themselves. 11 You may be sure that such a man is warped and sinful; he is self-condemned.
I am planning to send either Artemas or Tychicus to you. As soon as one of them arrives, do your best to meet me at Nicopolis as quickly as you can, for I have decided to stay there for the winter. 12 As soon as I send Artemas or Tychicus to you, do your best to come to me at Nicopolis, because I have decided to winter there.
Do everything you can to help Zenas the lawyer and Apollos with their trip. See that they are given everything they need. 13 Do everything you can to help Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their way and see that they have everything they need.
For our people should not have unproductive lives. They must learn to do good by helping others who have urgent needs. 14 Our people must learn to devote themselves to doing what is good, in order that they may provide for daily necessities and not live unproductive lives.
Everybody here sends greetings. Please give my greetings to all of the believers who love us. May God's grace be with you all. 15 Everyone with me sends you greetings. Greet those who love us in the faith. Grace be with you all.
