10 Ways to Remember the Power of Jesus

The evil of this present age can seem overpowering for us. We can grow discouraged or overwhelmed with all that is wrong. The hymns of old sympathize with us and remind us that God is in control. I think of the line in the popular hymn This Is My Father’s World – “That though the wrong seems oft so strong / God is the ruler yet.” And then, I think to Martin Luther’s beautiful exclamation of God’s power over the devil in his hymn A Mighty Fortress Is Our God – “We tremble not for him . . . / For lo! His doom is sure.”

The Scriptures say that the very power by which Jesus rose from the dead is the power He has given us for transformed lives (Ephesians 1:19-20). It doesn’t take me long to think of how Jesus turns lives in new directions. The apostle Paul, for example, was a persecutor of Christ’s church and was made into a follower of Christ and member — then leader — of that church. We can also look to our own lives and the testimonies of those we know to see how God is working in the lives of people to turn lives from sin and toward His goodness.

We are taught to pray because our battle is not against flesh and blood, but “against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places” (Ephesians 6:12). When we pray against temptation and evil, we are acknowledging that God can and will deliver us from evil (Matthew 6:13). Nothing is too hard for God.

When Jesus will return, we know He has the power over the Book of Life. Jesus did not come the first time to judge — but to seek and save us as precious, beloved lost sheep. Yet we know that He will come again and His judgments will be with Him — concerning who belongs to Him for all eternity and who does not, but will perish (Matthew 25:31-33).

We are taught in Scripture that there will be a day with no more tears, sorrow, or pain. We are taught that Jesus will dwell with His people in purity. He will be our light. We are taught that there will be a new order (Revelation 21:4) — and past things will be no longer remembered. Jesus has power to usher in that new, glorious reality.

God is omnipotent, or all-powerful. We could explore many other facets of His power, like His powerful Word that accomplishes His purposes, the power of truth through His church, or the power He showed when He spoke creation into existence out of nothing. These examples of God’s power remind us that our lives are not in our hands, but we live at the behest of a God who has a plan for His world. Nothing can thwart the almighty God. We can rest assured that the world is held in His mighty hands.
