7 Comforting Prayers for Sickness
Share
Sickness is a part of life that can be difficult to experience and navigate. Naturally, sickness takes a physical toll, but it can also impact someone spiritually and emotionally. Scripture reveals that God comforts us when we are troubled (see 2 Corinthians 1:4). Certainly, God loves us and is with us in every desperate situation, even when it comes to physical sickness.
The Bible instructs us to pray for those who are sick.
“Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord” (James 5:14).
When someone is going through illness, it is important for their brothers and sisters in Christ to pray for them. We do not know how God will answer those prayers, but we can be confident He hears them and will answer them in His perfect way and will. Here are 7 prayers to say for those who are dealing with sickness.

1. A Prayer for Healing of Everyday Illnesses
Gracious God,
I thank you for seeing me and knowing that I am not feeling my best today. This illness has come unexpectedly, has interrupted my plans, and is causing me to feel weary. I trust that you are in control, and I trust that you will take care of me through this. Help me to get done what needs to get done, and to let go of what can wait for another day. Lord, would you bring your healing hand upon me that I may get well and be past this illness? I ask that you help my body to mend and be fully recovered. Give me strength, give me clarity of mind, and peace that this will pass. I pray for healthier days ahead in Jesus’ name,
Amen.
2. A Prayer for Those with Chronic Pain
Loving Father,
I praise you because you are good. I trust that even though I suffer and deal with this chronic pain, you remain good and faithful to me. You understand my afflictions better than anyone else. Lord, would you please grant me peace and comfort? I need your help. I need your strength. My Lord, I cry out to you asking that you would help me on my worst days, and see me through. Let my pain be alleviated and let me experience times of reprieve. I pray for the support I need from loved ones for encouragement and help. Let me feel your loving arms around me. You hear every pray, you see every tear, and you know every worry I have. Thank you for being with me as I endure. May I bear the fruit of the Spirit and bring glory to you through my suffering. In Jesus’ name I pray,
Amen.

3. A Prayer for the Terminal Diagnosis
Heavenly Father,
I come to you with deep sorrow in my heart. I feel afraid of what the future holds with a terminal diagnosis. This life is all I know, and my time is shorter than I thought. Would you stay near to me, oh God? Help me to feel your loving presence and comfort. I ask that you would give me peace in the days and weeks ahead and in whatever time I have. I ask that you would help my time on this earth be meaningful, that I would savor as many days as possible, and that you would walk with me on this journey to an eternity with you. I pray for my loved ones, that we could all find comfort and peace in you as we walk through this terminal diagnosis. Let me trust that you love me and are with me. Lord, no matter what, you have been good to me and I am grateful for your faithfulness. Thank you for your mercy and your grace through Christ Jesus,
Amen.
4. A Prayer for Strength and Recovery
Dear Jesus,
I am so grateful that you have been with me and remain with me every step of the way as I heal and recover. How blessed I am to not be alone in this. I ask for your continued help as I mend. I admit, Lord, that some moments and some days are tough, but I know you hear my cries and pleas for help. I ask for your strength to pour into me. Give me hope that I will heal, and confidence that each day I will get better, even when there may be setbacks. Give me patience with myself, my loved ones, and my doctors as we all work together on the road to recovery. Help me to keep my mind on you and not get weighed down with defeat or worry. I ask for your help and that you would continue healing my body. Thank you that you have not left me but that you are doing a good work in and through me.
Amen.

5. A Prayer of Wisdom for Doctors
Lord,
I thank you for sending good doctors and healthcare providers into my life to help me in this season of sickness. Surely, you are looking after me and sending the support I need. I ask, Lord, that you give wisdom and insight to my doctors as they care for me, decide on treatments, and figure out what the best course of healing is. Lead me in the way that you would want me to go. Give clarity to my doctors and all those who are part of my healthcare team. Guide their decisions and help them to discover and discern what they need to know for the betterment of my health. You are a good God who is using these people to help me overcome this sickness. I ask that your healing hand would continue to be on me as they have the wisdom they need to care for me. I ask this all in Jesus’ name,
Amen.
6. A Prayer Thanking God for Being our Healer
God, my healer and great physician,
I come to you with a heart full of gratitude and praise. For I know that you are my healer. You see every ailment, every need, and every body that needs to be healed. You are faithful and good. Thank you for being my healer and my help. I know that I can come to you and cast my cares upon you, even the ones I have due to sickness. I praise you for being the God who can bring healing to my body. You are a compassionate God who looks after His children. You are a merciful God who knows our suffering. Without you, I could not get through this time of battling sickness. Thank you for bringing healing in your perfect way and time. I pray this in Jesus’ name,
Amen.

7. A Prayer for Caretakers
Holy Lord,
I thank you for the caretakers. I thank you for their heart and willingness to take care of those who are suffering, sick, or dying. You see them and all they go through as they care for another human being. I lift up the caretakers to you, Lord, and ask that you would give them strength each day to carry and meet the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs. I ask that you would give them wisdom to care for the person to the best of their ability and to find resources and assistance. I ask that you would comfort them on their hard days, when they are feeling weary and overwhelmed, reminding them that you are with them and will help them. Help our caretakers to find moments to take care of themselves, getting the rest and respite that they too need. Thank you for looking after the caretakers, Lord. I pray this all in Jesus’ name,
Amen.
Prayer can bring relief and peace no matter what sickness we may be facing. We have a God who cares for us and wants us to go to Him with every need. It is important to pray for one another when sickness comes and to ask God for his help and healing. The Bible declares that by Jesus’ stripes, we are healed (see Isaiah 53:5). When we pray to God, we are declaring our trust in Him and casting our cares upon him. It is good to put our faith in him and know that he will hear every prayer when it comes to sickness and suffering.
