2 Samuel 16

1 Cuando David pasó un poco más allá de la cumbre, he aquí que Siba, el criado de Mefiboset, salió a su encuentro con un par de asnos aparejados, y sobre ellos había doscientos panes, cien racimos de uvas pasas, cien frutas de verano y un odre de vino.

2 Y el rey dijo a Siba: ¿Para qué tienes esto? Y Siba respondió: Los asnos son para que la familia del rey monte, y el pan y la fruta de verano para que los jóvenes coman, y el vino para que beba cualquiera que se fatigue en el desierto.

3 Entonces el rey dijo: ¿Y dónde está el hijo de tu señor? Y Siba respondió al rey: He aquí, está en Jerusalén, pues ha dicho: "Hoy la casa de Israel me devolverá el reino de mi padre."

4 Y el rey dijo a Siba: He aquí, todo lo que pertenece a Mefiboset es tuyo. Y Siba dijo: Me inclino; que halle yo gracia ante tus ojos, oh rey, mi señor.

5 Al llegar el rey David a Bahurim, he aquí, salió de allí un hombre de la familia de la casa de Saúl que se llamaba Simei, hijo de Gera. Cuando salió, iba maldiciendo;

6 y tiraba piedras a David y a todos los siervos del rey David, aunque todo el pueblo y todos los hombres valientes estaban a su derecha y a su izquierda.

7 Así decía Simei mientras maldecía: ¡Fuera, fuera, hombre sanguinario e indigno!

8 El SEÑOR ha hecho volver sobre ti toda la sangre derramada de la casa de Saúl, en cuyo lugar has reinado; el SEÑOR ha entregado el reino en mano de tu hijo Absalón. He aquí, estás prendido en tu propia maldad, porque eres hombre sanguinario.

9 Entonces Abisai, hijo de Sarvia, dijo al rey: ¿Por qué ha de maldecir este perro muerto a mi señor el rey? Déjame que vaya ahora y le corte la cabeza.

10 Pero el rey dijo: ¿Qué tengo yo que ver con vosotros, hijos de Sarvia? Si él maldice, y si el SEÑOR le ha dicho: "Maldice a David", ¿quién, pues, le dirá: "¿Por qué has hecho esto?"

11 Y David dijo a Abisai y a todos sus siervos: He aquí, mi hijo que salió de mis entrañas busca mi vida; ¿cuánto más entonces este benjamita? Dejadlo, que siga maldiciendo, porque el SEÑOR se lo ha dicho.

12 Quizá el SEÑOR mire mi aflicción y me devuelva bien por su maldición de hoy.

13 Así pues, David y sus hombres siguieron su camino; y Simei iba por el lado del monte paralelo a él, y mientras iba lo maldecía, le tiraba piedras y le arrojaba polvo.

14 Y el rey y todo el pueblo que iba con él llegaron al Jordán fatigados, y allí descansaron.

15 Entonces Absalón y todo el pueblo, los hombres de Israel, entraron en Jerusalén, y Ahitofel con él.

16 Sucedió que cuando Husai arquita, amigo de David, vino a Absalón, Husai dijo a Absalón: ¡Viva el rey! ¡Viva el rey!

17 Y Absalón dijo a Husai: ¿Es esta tu lealtad para con tu amigo? ¿Por qué no fuiste con tu amigo?

18 Respondió Husai a Absalón: No, pues a quien el SEÑOR, este pueblo y todos los hombres de Israel han escogido, de él seré, y con él me quedaré.

19 Además, ¿a quién debería yo servir? ¿No habría de ser en la presencia de su hijo? Tal como he servido delante de tu padre, así seré delante de ti.

20 Entonces Absalón dijo a Ahitofel: Dad vuestro consejo. ¿Qué debemos hacer?

21 Y Ahitofel respondió a Absalón: Llégate a las concubinas de tu padre, a quienes él ha dejado para guardar la casa; entonces todo Israel sabrá que te has hecho odioso a tu padre, y las manos de todos los que están contigo se fortalecerán.

22 Levantaron, pues, para Absalón una tienda en el terrado, y Absalón se llegó a las concubinas de su padre a la vista de todo Israel.

23 El consejo que Ahitofel daba en aquellos días era como si uno consultara la palabra de Dios; así era considerado todo consejo de Ahitofel tanto por David como por Absalón.

2 Samuel 16 Commentary

Chapter 16

Ziba's falsehood. (1-4) David cursed by Shimei. (5-14) Ahithophel's counsel. (15-23)

Verses 1-4 Ziba belied Mephibosheth. Great men ought always to be jealous of flatterers, and to be careful that they hear both sides.

Verses 5-14 David bore Shimei's curses much better than Ziba's flatteries; by these he was brought to pass a wrong judgment on another, by those to pass a right judgment on himself: the world's smiles are more dangerous than its frowns. Once and again David spared Saul's life, while Saul sought his. But innocence is no defence against malice and falsehood; nor are we to think it strange, if we are charged with that which we have been most careful to keep ourselves from. It is well for us, that men are not to be our judges, but He whose judgment is according to truth. See how patient David was under this abuse. Let this remind us of Christ, who prayed for those who reviled and crucified him. A humble spirit will turn reproaches into reproofs, and get good from them, instead of being provoked by them. David the hand of God in it, and comforts himself that God would bring good out of his affliction. We may depend upon God to repay, not only our services, but our sufferings.

Verses 15-23 The wisest counsellors of that age were Ahithophel and Hushai: Absalom thinks himself sure of success, when he has both; on them he relies, and consults not the ark, though he had that with him. But miserable counsellors were they both. Hushai would never counsel him to do wisely. Ahithophel counselled him to do wickedly; and so did as effectually betray him, as he did, who was designedly false to him: for they that advise men to sin, certainly advise them to their hurt. After all, honesty is the best policy, and will be found so in the long run. Ahithophel gave wicked counsel to Absalom; to render himself so hateful to his father, that he would never be reconciled to him; this cursed policy was of the devil. How desperately wicked is the human heart!
