Jueces 8

1 Entonces los hombres de Efraín le dijeron: ¿Qué es esto que nos has hecho, al no llamarnos cuando fuiste a pelear contra Madián? Y le criticaron duramente.

2 Pero él les dijo: ¿Qué he hecho yo ahora en comparación con vosotros? ¿No es mejor el rebusco de Efraín que la vendimia de Abiezer?

3 Dios ha entregado en vuestras manos a los jefes de Madián, Oreb y Zeeb; ¿y qué pude hacer yo en comparación con vosotros? Entonces se aplacó la ira de ellos contra él cuando dijo esto.

4 Gedeón y los trescientos hombres que iban con él llegaron al Jordán y lo cruzaron, cansados, mas continuando la persecución.

5 Y dijo a los hombres de Sucot: Os ruego que deis pan a la gente que me sigue, porque están cansados, y estoy persiguiendo a Zeba y a Zalmuna, reyes de Madián.

6 Y los jefes de Sucot dijeron: ¿Están ya las manos de Zeba y Zalmuna en tu poder, para que demos pan a tu ejército?

7 Y Gedeón respondió: Muy bien, cuando el SEÑOR haya entregado en mi mano a Zeba y a Zalmuna, trillaré vuestras carnes con espinos del desierto y con abrojos.

8 De allí subió a Peniel, y les habló de la misma manera; y los hombres de Peniel le respondieron tal como los de Sucot le habían contestado.

9 Y habló también a los hombres de Peniel, diciendo: Cuando yo vuelva sano y salvo, derribaré esta torre.

10 Ahora bien, Zeba y Zalmuna estaban en Carcor, y sus ejércitos con ellos, unos quince mil hombres, los que habían quedado de todo el ejército de los hijos del oriente; porque los que habían caído eran ciento veinte mil hombres que sacaban espada.

11 Y subió Gedeón por el camino de los que habitaban en tiendas al este de Noba y Jogbeha, y atacó el campamento cuando el campamento estaba desprevenido.

12 Cuando Zeba y Zalmuna huyeron, los persiguió; capturó a los dos reyes de Madián, Zeba y Zalmuna y llenó de terror a todo el ejército.

13 Después Gedeón, hijo de Joás, volvió de la batalla por la subida a Heres.

14 Y capturó a un joven de Sucot y lo interrogó. Entonces el joven le dio por escrito los nombres de los príncipes de Sucot y de sus ancianos, setenta y siete hombres.

15 Y fue a los hombres de Sucot y dijo: He aquí a Zeba y a Zalmuna, acerca de los cuales me injuriasteis, diciendo: "¿Están ya las manos de Zeba y Zalmuna en tu mano para que demos pan a tus hombres que están fatigados?"

16 Entonces tomó a los ancianos de la ciudad, y espinos del desierto y abrojos, y con ellos castigó a los hombres de Sucot.

17 Derribó la torre de Peniel y mató a los hombres de la ciudad.

18 Después dijo a Zeba y a Zalmuna: ¿Qué clase de hombres eran los que matasteis en Tabor? Y ellos respondieron: Eran como tú, cada uno parecía hijo de rey.

19 Y él dijo: Eran mis hermanos, hijos de mi madre. Vive el SEÑOR, que si los hubierais dejado con vida, yo no os quitaría la vida.

20 Y dijo a Jeter su primogénito: Levántate y mátalos. Pero el joven no sacó la espada porque tenía temor, pues todavía era muchacho.

21 Entonces Zeba y Zalmuna dijeron: Levántate tú y cae sobre nosotros; porque como es el hombre, así es su fortaleza. Y se levantó Gedeón y mató a Zeba y a Zalmuna, y tomó los adornos de media luna que sus camellos llevaban al cuello.

22 Y los hombres de Israel dijeron a Gedeón: Reina sobre nosotros, tú y tus hijos, y también el hijo de tu hijo, porque nos has librado de la mano de Madián.

23 Pero Gedeón les dijo: No reinaré sobre vosotros, ni tampoco reinará sobre vosotros mi hijo; el SEÑOR reinará sobre vosotros.

24 Les dijo también Gedeón: Quisiera pediros que cada uno de vosotros me dé un zarcillo de su botín (pues tenían zarcillos de oro, porque eran ismaelitas).

25 Y ellos dijeron: De cierto te los daremos. Y tendieron un manto, y cada uno de ellos echó allí un zarcillo de su botín.

26 El peso de los zarcillos de oro que él pidió fue de mil setecientos siclos de oro, sin contar los adornos de media luna, los pendientes y los vestidos de púrpura que llevaban los reyes de Madián y sin contar los collares que llevaban sus camellos al cuello.

27 Y Gedeón hizo de ello un efod, y lo colocó en Ofra, su ciudad, con el cual todo Israel se prostituyó allí, y esto vino a ser ruina para Gedeón y su casa.

28 Así fue subyugado Madián delante de los hijos de Israel, y ya no volvieron a levantar cabeza. Y el país tuvo descanso por cuarenta años en los días de Gedeón.

29 Entonces Jerobaal, hijo de Joás, fue y habitó en su casa.

30 Y tuvo Gedeón setenta hijos que fueron sus descendientes directos, porque tuvo muchas mujeres.

31 La concubina que tenía en Siquem también le dio un hijo, y le puso por nombre Abimelec.

32 Y murió Gedeón, hijo de Joás, a una edad avanzada y fue sepultado en el sepulcro de su padre Joás, en Ofra de los abiezeritas.

33 Y sucedió que al morir Gedeón, los hijos de Israel volvieron a prostituirse con los baales e hicieron a Baal-berit su dios.

34 Y los hijos de Israel se olvidaron del SEÑOR su Dios que los había librado de manos de todos sus enemigos en derredor;

35 tampoco mostraron bondad a la casa de Jerobaal, es decir, Gedeón, conforme a todo el bien que él había hecho a Israel.

Jueces 8 Commentary

Chapter 8

Gideon pacifies the Ephraimites. (1-3) Succoth and Penuel refuse to relieve Gideon. (4-12) Succoth and Penuel punished. (13-17) Gideon avenges his brethren. (18-21) Gideon declines the government, but given occasion for idolatry. (22-28) Gideon's death, Israel's ingratitude. (29-35)

Verses 1-3 Those who will not attempt or venture any thing in the cause of God, will be the most ready to censure and quarrel with such as are of a more zealous and enterprising spirit. And those who are the most backward to difficult services, will be the most angry not to have the credit of them. Gideon stands here as a great example of self-denial; and shows us that envy is best removed by humility. The Ephraimites had given vent to their passion in very wrong freedom of speech, a certain sign of a weak cause: reason runs low when chiding flies high.

Verses 4-12 Gideon's men were faint, yet pursuing; fatigued with what they had done, yet eager to do more against their enemies. It is many a time the true Christian's case, fainting, and yet pursuing. The world knows but little of the persevering and successful struggle the real believer maintains with his sinful heart. But he betakes himself to that Divine strength, in the faith of which he began his conflict, and by the supply of which alone he can finish it in triumph.

Verses 13-17 The active servants of the Lord meet with more dangerous opposition from false professors than from open enemies; but they must not care for the behaviour of those who are Israelites in name, but Midianites in heart. They must pursue the enemies of their souls, and of the cause of God, though they are ready to faint through inward conflicts and outward hardships. And they shall be enabled to persevere. The less men help, and the more they seek to hinder, the more will the Lord assist. Gideon's warning being slighted, the punishment was just. Many are taught with the briers and thorns of affliction, who would not learn otherwise.

Verses 18-21 The kings of Midian must be reckoned with. As they confessed themselves guilty of murder, Gideon acted as the avenger of blood, being the next of kin to the persons slain. Little did they think to have heard of this so long after; but murder seldom goes unpunished in this life. Sins long forgotten by man, must be accounted for to God. What poor consolation in death from the hope of suffering less pain, and of dying with less disgrace than some others! yet many are more anxious on these accounts, than concerning the future judgment, and what will follow.

Verses 22-28 Gideon refused the government the people offered him. No good man can be pleased with any honour done to himself, which belongs only to God. Gideon thought to keep up the remembrance of this victory by an ephod, made of the choicest of the spoils. But probably this ephod had, as usual, a teraphim annexed to it, and Gideon intended this for an oracle to be consulted. Many are led into false ways by one false step of a good man. It became a snare to Gideon himself, and it proved the ruin of the family. How soon will ornaments which feed the lust of the eye, and form the pride of life, as well as tend to the indulgences of the flesh, bring shame on those who are fond of them!

Verses 29-35 As soon as Gideon was dead, who kept the people to the worship of the God of Israel, they found themselves under no restraint; then they went after Baalim, and showed no kindness to the family of Gideon. No wonder if those who forget their God, forget their friends. Yet conscious of our own ingratitude to the Lord, and observing that of mankind in general, we should learn to be patient under any unkind returns we meet with for our poor services, and resolve, after the Divine example, not to be overcome of evil, but to overcome evil with good.

In this chapter we are told how Gideon pacified the Ephraimites, who complained because they were not sent unto to fight the Midianites, Jud 8:1-3 how he pursued the Midianites, until he took their two kings, and on his return chastised the men of Succoth and Penuel, because they refused to relieve his men with food as they were pursuing, Jud 8:4-17 how he slew the two kings of Midian, Jud 8:18-21 and after this conquest refused to take the government of Israel when offered him, Jud 8:22,23 how he requested of the Israelites the earrings they had taken from the Midianites, with which he in weakness made an ephod, which proved a snare to his house, Jud 8:24-27 how that the people were in peace forty years during his life, and that he had a numerous issue, and died in a good old age, Jud 8:28-32 but that after his death the Israelites fell into idolatry, and were ungrateful to his family, Jud 8:33-35.
