CHAPTER 15

The Ark Brought to Jerusalem (15:1–29)

(2 Samuel 6:12–16)

1–24 In these verses, the writer supplements the account found in 2 Samuel Chapter 6. After David had been anointed king of Israel, he initially attempted to bring the ark to Jerusalem; but this attempt ended in disaster, because David had not followed God’s instructions exactly (see 2 Samuel 6:1–11; 1 Chronicles 13: 1–14 and comment). Therefore, after David had settled in his palace, he again attempted to bring the ark to Jerusalem—but this time, in the proper way. In these verses the writer describes that “proper way”: only the priests and Levites were permitted to transport the ark, and it was carried with poles (verse 16), in accordance with Moses’ instructions (Exodus 25:1215).

David told the priests and Levites to consecrate13 themselves before moving the ark (verses 12,14). Then, from among the Levites, musicians were appointed to accompany the ark; an account of the musicians is given in verses 16–24.
