24–27 Because the people of Israel had been granted rest—peace and security—they no longer needed to move the tabernacle from place to place (verse 26). Therefore, many Levites were now free to perform other functions, such as gatekeeping and ministering in music.

28–32 Here the writer outlines some of the duties David assigned to the Levites. Essentially they were to help the priests, the descendants of Aaron (verse 28), in accordance with the command of Moses (Numbers 3:5–8). The duties listed here are similar to those listed in 1 Chronicles 9:28–34. The Levites were also instructed to assist in the offering of sacrifices each morning and evening (Exodus 29:38–39), as well as at other special festivals and appointed feasts (verses 30–31).

In this way David assigned the Levites their various responsibilities for the Tent of Meeting—that is, the tabernacle (Exodus 27:21)—and for the Holy Place (Exodus 26:33), where the bread (Exodus 25:30) was set out on the table (verses 29,32). According to 1 Chronicles 29:11–19, David received all these instructions for the temple services directly from the Lord.
