23–24 Here the writer mentions the census David took, in which he numbered the fighting men over twenty years of age (see 2 Samuel 24:1–17; 1 Chronicles 21:1–17 and comment). The Lord was displeased with David because the taking of the census indicated a lack of faith on David’s part; after all, the Lord had promised to make Israel as numerous as the stars (see Genesis 15:5; 22:17). The Lord had already undertaken to protect Israel, and so there had been no need for David to number men.

The King’s Overseers (27:25–34)
