In verse 10, Hezekiah states his intention to make a covenant with the Lord—that is, to renew the covenant—much as Asa had renewed the covenant generations earlier (see 2 Chronicles 15:10–12). By doing this, Hezekiah hoped to turn away the Lord’s fierce anger (verse 11).
12–19 Here the writer describes the purification and consecration of the temple. The priests removed every ceremonially unclean18 object and destroyed it (verse 16). And they returned to the temple all the sacred articles that Ahaz had removed (verse 19).
20–36 In these verses, the writer describes Hezekiah’s rededication of the temple; it followed the pattern set by Solomon when he dedicated the temple for the first time (1 Kings 8:62–66; 2 Chronicles 7:110). In this way, the service of the temple . . . was reestablished (verse 35), and all the people rejoiced19 (verse 36).
