CHAPTER 38

A Prophecy Against Gog (38:1–23)

1–6 In these next two chapters, Ezekiel describes a future battle that will occur after Israel has been restored and its people are living under their new ruler (the Messiah) and under a new covenant (see Ezekiel 34:25–31; 36:24–38). This great battle has not yet taken place. It will take place after many days—in future years (verse 8). It will be a final battle between the people of God and the forces of evil opposed to them. At that time God will protect His people and the forces of evil will be destroyed.

The leader of these evil forces will be a ruler named Gog, of the land of Magog (verse 2). At the time of this battle, he will be the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal (present–day Turkey). The Lord will cause Gog and his various allies to invade Israel (verses 4–5); included among Gog’s allies will be Gomer and Beth Togarmah84 (verse 6).

7–13 The Lord addresses Gog and tells him to get ready to invade Israel (verse 7). The people of Israel have been living in peace and safety (verse 8). They are unsuspecting; because they trust God to protect them, they live without walls and without gates and bars (verse 11). Therefore, Gog will be all the more tempted to attack them and seize much plunder (verses 12–13).

14–23 The Lord says that Gog and the other nations with him will come from the far north and advance against Israel like a cloud (verses 15–16). The Lord had spoken about this invasion in former days through His prophets85 (verse 17). As Gog attacks Israel, a great earthquake will occur (verse 19). God will summon a sword (of judgment) against Gog; in panic Gog’s soldiers will begin to fight each other (verse 21). God will use other “weapons” also, as He executes judgment upon Gog and his allies (verse 22). Then they will see God’s greatness and His holiness (verse 23).
