21–23 Ezra was ashamed to ask the king for an armed escort, because he had earlier told him that the Lord would protect them on their journey. So now, before departing, Ezra and the whole group fasted and prayed for the Lord’s protection28 (verse 23). And the Lord answered their prayer: no harm befell them on their journey.
24–30 Ezra weighed out all the gifts that had been donated for the temple and placed them in the hands of the leading priests and Levites in his party.29 Ezra then told them that both they and the gifts were consecrated30—dedicated—to the Lord (verse 28).
31–36 Ezra’s party arrived in Jerusalem safely and turned the gifts over to the chief priest, his deputy, and two leading Levites (verse 33). Then Ezra and those with him sacrificed burnt offerings to dedicate themselves anew to God and to thank Him for His mercy to them (see Leviticus 1:1–17); they also sacrificed a sin offering to cleanse themselves from any sins they may have committed (Leviticus 4:1–2,22–26).
