6–20 The sons and grandsons of Ham founded nations in the southern part of the Middle East and in North Africa. The nations founded by two of Ham’s sons would later play a major role in Old Testament history: Mizraim, or Egypt; and Canaan, present-day Israel and Palestine (verse 6). Nimrod is specially mentioned here (verse 8) because he founded the city of Babylon, which will be featured in the next chapter.

21–32 The sons and grandsons of Shem founded nations in the central part of the Middle East. Of particular note is the statement in verse 21: Shem was the ancestor of all the sons of Eber. The name Eber is the origin of the word Hebrew. Two sons of Eber are mentioned: Peleg and Joktan (verse 25). Joktan’s sons founded nations in present-day Arabia (verses 26–29). Peleg44 was the ancestor of Abraham, the father of the Hebrew (Jewish) nation, whose descendants would become God’s chosen people.
