7–24 These verses list the kings of city-states west of the Jordan, that is, in Canaan proper. The names listed in these verses correspond generally to the kings mentioned in Joshua Chapters 6–11. Some of the kings themselves were defeated, but their cities were not immediately captured; a few cities had to be captured more than once.

Such a listing of names as we find in this chapter may seem boring and irrelevant to the modern reader. But let us reflect on the deeper message of this chapter. First, this list of defeated kings tells us that God has fulfilled His ancient covenant promise to give the land to the Israelites. Second, this chapter tells us that wicked nations ultimately do not have a right to live on God’s land; instead, they face God’s judgment. Third, this chapter tells us that if God’s people are obedient to Him, He will cause them to prevail. And finally, this chapter tells us that we must wait patiently for God’s timing (Hebrews 6:12); His promises are sure. We can be sure that one day Jesus will return (Mark 13:26–27; John 14:1–3), and a new heaven and a new earth will be established where there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain (Revelation 21:1–4).
