Third, Nehemiah assigned sections of goldsmiths and merchants worked to the wall to those whose houses were located near that section;12 thus they had a greater interest in performing their work well.

Finally, Nehemiah assigned work to people on the basis of their associations—geographical, professional, and familial. For example, the priests worked together on their section (verse 1); the men of Jericho worked together on another section (verse 2); the sons of Hassenaah built one of the gates (verse 3). The Levites worked together (verse 17); the temple servants worked together (verse 26); the goldsmiths and merchants worked together (verses 31–32).

What can we learn from this? Namely, that every one of us fits in somewhere; every one of us has a part to play. All these different people were working together with one purpose in mind: to rebuild the wall. So it is among Christians. Our one overriding purpose is to build up the church of Christ and to make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19). And Christ has assigned to each of us our “section of the wall” (Romans 12:3–8; 1 Corinthians 12:4–27).
