17:15 When the psalmist says he will see God’s face, he probably meant a spiritual experience in the sanctuary in which God would reveal himself more fully (11:7; 27:4; 42:2; 63:2), possibly a visionary experience similar to that of Ezekiel (Ezk 1:1-28). To “see [God’s] face” is to experience the reality of his presence (Ps 24:6). In view of the later revelation of the believers’ resurrection in Christ, these words took on greater meaning (1Jn 3:2; Rv 22:4). But that fuller meaning does not nullify the original reference to a spiritual experience.
