II. Edom’s Sins Against Judah (10-14)

10-14 Why was God outraged with Edom? Because of violence done to [their] brother Jacob (verse 10). Because the Edomites had descended from Esau, the brother of Jacob, Scripture refers to their nations as brothers. But, there was bad blood in the family (see, e.g., 1 Sam 14:47-48; 2 Sam 8:13-14; 1 Kgs 11:14-22). And when Judah and Jerusalem were captured by Babylon, Edom acted like the rest of the nations (verse 11). In the day of his brother’s calamity, Esau’s descendants offered neither help nor compassion to the people of Judah. They could have blessed Israel and been blessed by God (see Gen 12:3); instead, they chose to gloat . . . rejoice . . . and mock (verse 12). They took advantage of their brother in his day of distress (verses 13-14).
