II. Thanksgiving for Philemon (4-7)

4-7 Philemon was a good man. Paul regularly remembers him in his prayers and thanks God for him (v. 4) because he was well known for his love for all the saints and his faith . . . in the Lord Jesus (v. 5). The only way to know that you have a working love for Jesus Christ is if you have a working love toward God’s people. It is a contradiction to say you love God if you fail to love your fellow Christians (see 1 John 4:7-12, 20-21). Paul tells Philemon that his positive reputation is known all over the place. The apostle is filled with joy because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through Philemon (v. 7). He was constantly encouraging, helping, and ministering to other Christians.
