IV. The Lord’s Declaration (2:10-23)

2:10-14 Haggai got the priest to give a ruling on a ceremonial matter (2:11) clarifying that defilement is transferable, just like a contagious disease (2:13). Disobedience by God’s people, then, renders sacrifices unacceptable (2:14). Obedience is necessary for worship to be accepted.

2:15-19 Haggai reminded the people of the economic disaster that came on them because of their disobedience (2:15-17). Because they’d shifted priorities and obeyed, however, God would turn their curses into blessings.

2:20-23 Haggai addressed Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, directly to encourage him (2:21). God would accomplish his kingdom program by bringing judgment on the nations that opposed him (2:22). Zerubbabel was God’s appointed leader for the temple rebuilding task and was a prototype of the Messiah as he led the people to do the kingdom work of prioritizing God. Indeed, the true Messiah would come in the Davidic line through Zerubbabel and will ultimately lead the nation from the temple in Jerusalem.
