1 Yǐsèliè wáng Yǐlā de érzi hé xì yà dì sān nián , Yóudà wáng Yàhāsī de érzi Xīxījiā dēng jī .

2 Tā dēng jī de shíhou nián èr shí wǔ suì , zaì Yēlùsǎlĕng zuò wáng Ěr shí jiǔ nián . tā mǔqin míng jiào yà bǐ , shì Sājiālìyē de nǚér .

3 Xīxījiā xíng Yēhéhuá yǎn zhōng kàn wéi zhēng de shì , xiàofǎ tā zǔ Dàwèi yīqiè suǒ xíng de .

4 Tā feì qù qiū tán , huǐhuaì zhù xiàng , kǎn xià mùǒu , dá suì Móxī suǒ zào de tóng shé , yīnwei dào nàshí Yǐsèliè rén réng xiàng tóng shé shāoxiāng . Xīxījiā jiào tóng shé wèi tóng kuaì ( huò zuò rén chēng tóng shé wèi tóng xiàng ) .

5 Xīxījiā yǐkào Yēhéhuá Yǐsèliè de shén , zaì tā qián hòu de Yóudà liè wáng zhōng méiyǒu yī gè jí tāde .

6 Yīnwei tā zhuān kào Yēhéhuá , zǒng bù líkāi , jǐn shǒu Yēhéhuá suǒ fēnfu Móxī de jièmìng .

7 Yēhéhuá yǔ tā tóng zaì , tā wúlùn wǎng héchu qù jǐn dōu hēng tōng . tā beìpàn , bù kĕn shìfèng Yàshù wáng .

8 Xīxījiā gōngjī Fēilìshì rén , zhídào Jiāsà , bìng Jiāsà de sì jìng , cóng le wàng lóu dào jiāngù chéng .

15 Xīxījiā jiù bǎ Yēhéhuá diàn lǐ hé wánggōng fǔ kù lǐ suǒyǒude yínzi dōu gĕi le tā .

16 Nàshí , Yóudà wáng Xīxījiā jiāng Yēhéhuá diàn mén shàng de jīnzi , hé tā zìjǐ bāo zaì zhù shàng de jīnzi , dōu guā xià lái , gĕi le Yàshù wáng .

17 Yàshù wáng cóng Làjí chāiqiǎn tā Ěr tàn , là bǎi sǎ lì , hé là bǎi shā jī shuaìlǐng dà jūn wǎng Yēlùsǎlĕng , dào Xīxījiā wáng nàli qù . tāmen shàng dào Yēlùsǎlĕng , jiù zhàn zaì shàng chí de shuǐgōu páng , zaì piào bù dì de dà lù shàng .

18 Tāmen hūjiào wáng de shíhou , jiù yǒu Xīlèjiā de érzi jiāzǎi Yǐlìyàjìng , bìng shū jì shĕ bǎi nà hé Yàsà de érzi shǐ guān yuē yà , chūlai jiàn tāmen .

19 Là bǎi shā jī shuō , nǐmen qù gàosu Xīxījiā shuō , Yàshù dà wáng rúcǐ shuō , nǐ suǒ yǐkào de yǒu shénme kĕ zhàng laì de ne .

20 Nǐ shuō yǒu dǎzhàng de jì móu hé nénglì , wǒ kàn bú guō shì xū huà . nǐ dàodǐ yǐkào shuí cái beìpàn wǒ ne .

21 Kàn nǎ , nǐ suǒ yǐkào de Āijí shì nà yēshāng de wĕi zhàng rén ruò kào zhè zhàng , jiù bì cī tòu tāde shǒu . Āijí wáng fǎlǎo xiàng yīqiè yǐkào tāde rén yĕ shì zhèyàng .

22 Nǐmen ruò duì wǒ shuō , wǒmen yǐkào Yēhéhuá wǒmen de shén , Xīxījiā qǐbù shì jiāng shén de qiū tán hé jìtán feì qù , qiĕ duì Yóudà hé Yēlùsǎlĕng de rén shuō , nǐmen dāng zaì Yēlùsǎlĕng zhè tán qián jìngbaì ma .

23 Xiànzaì nǐ bǎ dāng tóu:5 gĕi wǒ zhǔ Yàshù wáng , wǒ gĕi nǐ èr qiā pǐ mǎ , kàn nǐ zhè yī miàn qí mǎ de rén gòu bú gòu .

24 Ruò bù rán , zĕn néng dá baì wǒ zhǔ chénpú zhōng zuì xiǎo de jūnzhǎng ne . nǐ jìng yǐkào Āijí de zhàn chē mǎ bīng ma .

25 Xiànzaì wǒ shàng lái gōngjī huǐmiè zhè dì , qǐ méiyǒu Yēhéhuá de yìsi ma . Yēhéhuá fēnfu wǒ shuō , nǐ shàng qù gōngjī huǐmiè zhè dì bā .

26 Xīlèjiā de érzi Yǐlìyàjìng hé shĕ bǎi nà , bìng yuē yà , duì là bǎi shā jī shuō , qiú nǐ yòng Yàlán yányǔ hé púrén shuōhuà , yīnwei wǒmen dǒng dé . búyào yòng Yóudà yányǔ hé wǒmen shuōhuà , dádào chéng shàng bǎixìng de ĕr zhōng .

27 Là bǎi shā jī shuō , wǒ zhǔ chāiqiǎn wǒ lái , qǐ shì dān duì nǐ hé nǐde zhǔ shuō zhèxie huà ma . bù yĕ shì duì zhèxie zuò zaì chéng shàng , yào yǔ nǐmen yītóng chī zìjǐ fèn , hē zìjǐ niào de rén shuō ma .

28 Yúshì là bǎi shā jī zhàn zhe , yòng Yóudà yányǔ dàshēng hǎn zhe shuō , nǐmen dāng tīng Yàshù dà wáng de huà .

29 Wáng rúcǐ shuō , nǐmen búyào beì Xīxījiā qī hōng le . yīn tā bùnéng jiù nǐmen tuōlí wǒde shǒu .

30 Yĕ búyào tīng Xīxījiā shǐ nǐmen yǐkào Yēhéhuá , shuō Yēhéhuá bìyào zhĕngjiù wǒmen , zhè chéng bì bù jiāo zaì Yàshù wáng de shǒu zhōng .

31 Búyào tīng Xīxījiā de huà . yīn Yàshù wáng rúcǐ shuō , nǐmen yào yǔ wǒ héhǎo , chūlai tóu jiàng wǒ , gèrén jiù kĕyǐ chī zìjǐ pútàoshù hé wúhuāguǒ shù de guǒzi , hē zìjǐ jǐng lǐ de shuǐ .

32 Dĕng wǒ lái lǐng nǐmen dào yī gè dìfang yǔ nǐmen bĕn dì yíyàng , jiù shì yǒu wǔgǔ hé xīn jiǔ zhī dì , yǒu liángshi hé pútaóyuán zhī dì , yǒu gǎnlǎn shù hé fēngmì zhī dì , hǎo shǐ nǐmen cún huó , búzhìyú sǐ . Xīxījiā quàndǎo nǐmen , shuō Yēhéhuá bì zhĕngjiù wǒmen ; nǐmen búyào tīng tāde huà .

34 Hā mǎ , yà Ěr bá de shén zaì nǎli ne . xī fǎ wà yīn , xī ná , yǐ wǎ de shén zaì nǎli ne . tāmen céng jiù sǎ Mǎlìyà tuōlí wǒde shǒu ma .

35 Zhèxie guó de shén yǒu shuí céng jiù zìjǐ de guó tuōlí wǒde shǒu ne . nándào Yēhéhuá néng jiù Yēlùsǎlĕng tuōlí wǒde shǒu ma .

Lièwángjìxià 18 Commentary

Chapter 18

Good reign of Hezekiah in Judah, Idolatry. (1-8) Sennacherib invades Judah. (9-16) Rabshakeh's blasphemies. (17-37)

Verses 1-8 Hezekiah was a true son of David. Some others did that which was right, but not like David. Let us not suppose that when times and men are bad, they must needs grow worse and worse; that does not follow: after many bad kings, God raised one up like David himself. The brazen serpent had been carefully preserved, as a memorial of God's goodness to their fathers in the wilderness; but it was idle and wicked to burn incense to it. All helps to devotion, not warranted by the word of God, interrupt the exercise of faith; they always lead to superstition and other dangerous evils. Human nature perverts every thing of this kind. True faith needs not such aids; the word of God, daily thought upon and prayed over, is all the outward help we need.

Verses 9-16 The descent Sennacherib made upon Judah, was a great calamity to that kingdom, by which God would try the faith of Hezekiah, and chastise the people. The secret dislike, the hypocrisy, and lukewarmness of numbers, require correction; such trials purify the faith and hope of the upright, and bring them to simple dependence on God.

Verses 17-37 Rabshakeh tries to convince the Jews, that it was to no purpose for them to stand it out. What confidence is this wherein thou trustest? It were well if sinners would submit to the force of this argument, in seeking peace with God. It is, therefore, our wisdom to yield to him, because it is in vain to contend with him: what confidence is that which those trust in who stand out against him? A great deal of art there is in this speech of Rabshakeh; but a great deal of pride, malice, falsehood, and blasphemy. Hezekiah's nobles held their peace. There is a time to keep silence, as well as a time to speak; and there are those to whom to offer any thing religious or rational, is to cast pearls before swine. Their silence made Rabshakeh yet more proud and secure. It is often best to leave such persons to rail and blaspheme; a decided expression of abhorrence is the best testimony against them. The matter must be left to the Lord, who has all hearts in his hands, committing ourselves unto him in humble submission, believing hope, and fervent prayer.

INTRODUCTION TO 2 KINGS 18

This chapter begins with the good reign of Hezekiah king of Judah, the reformation he made in the kingdom, and the prosperity that attended him when Israel was carried captive, 2Ki 18:1-12 and gives an account of the siege of Jerusalem by the king of Assyria, and of the distress Hezekiah was in, and the hard measures he was obliged to submit unto, 2Ki 18:13-18 and of the reviling and blasphemous speech of Rabshakeh, one of the generals of the king of Assyria, urging the Jews to a revolt from their king, 2Ki 18:19-37.
