Matthew 16:12-22

Listen to Matthew 16:12-22
12 1Then they understood that he did not tell them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of 2the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

Peter Confesses Jesus as the Christ

13 3Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, ā€œWho do people say that the Son of Man is? ā€
14 And they said, ā€œSome say 4John the Baptist, others say 5Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets. ā€
15 He said to them, ā€œBut who do you say that I am? ā€
16 Simon Peter replied, 6ā€œYou are 7the Christ, 8the Son of 9the living God. ā€
17 And Jesus answered him, 10ā€œBlessed are you, 11Simon Bar-Jonah! For 12flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, 13but my Father who is in heaven.
18 And I tell you, 14you are Peter, and 15on this rock[a] I will build my church, and 16the gates of 17hell[b] shall not prevail against it.
19 I will give you 18the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and 19whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed[c] in heaven. ā€
20 20Then he strictly charged the disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ.

Jesus Foretells His Death and Resurrection

21 21From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that 22he must go to Jerusalem and 23suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on 24the third day be raised.
22 And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, ā€œFar be it from you, Lord! [d] This shall never happen to you. ā€
