Mark 15:17

17 They dressed him in purple, twisted some thorns into a crown, and placed it on his head.

Mark 15:17 Meaning and Commentary

Mark 15:17

And they clothed him with purple
Matthew calls it a "scarlet" robe; and the Persic version here renders it a "red garment": it was of a colour resembling purple; it was pretty near it, and therefore so called; which is what kings were used to wear; and so in derision of him, as a king, clothed him with this mock purple robe; and which was very likely one of the soldiers' old coats:

and platted a crown of thorns, and put it about his head;
for a crown, and also a reed in his hand, instead of a sceptre, as Matthew relates; (See Gill on Matthew 26:28), (See Gill on Matthew 26:29).

Mark 15:17 In-Context

15 Pilate wanted to satisfy the people, so he freed Barabbas for them. But he had Jesus whipped and handed over to be crucified.
16 The soldiers led Jesus into the courtyard of the palace and called together the whole troop.
17 They dressed him in purple, twisted some thorns into a crown, and placed it on his head.
18 Then they began to greet him, "Long live the king of the Jews!"
19 They kept hitting him on the head with a stick, spitting on him, and kneeling in front of him with false humility.
