1
Now the daycame that Jonathan, the son of Saul, said to the youngman who was carrying his armor, "Come and let us crossover to the Philistines'garrison that is on the otherside." But he did not tell his father.
3
and Ahijah, the son of Ahitub, Ichabod'sbrother, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eli, the priest of the LORD at Shiloh, was wearing an ephod. And the people did not know that Jonathan had gone.
4
Between the passes by whichJonathansought to crossover to the Philistines'garrison, there was a sharpcrag on the oneside and a sharpcrag on the otherside, and the name of the one was Bozez, and the name of the otherSeneh.
6
Then Jonathansaid to the youngman who was carrying his armor, "Come and let us crossover to the garrison of theseuncircumcised; perhaps the LORD will work for us, for the LORD is not restrained to save by manyor by few."
11
When both of them revealed themselves to the garrison of the Philistines, the Philistinessaid, "Behold, Hebrews are coming out of the holeswhere* they have hidden themselves."
12
So the men of the garrisonhailedJonathan and his armorbearer and said, "Come up to us and we will tell you something." And Jonathansaid to his armorbearer, "Come up after me, for the LORD has given them into the hands of Israel."
13
Then Jonathanclimbed up on his hands and feet, with his armorbearerbehind him; and they fellbeforeJonathan, and his armorbearerput some to deathafter him.
15
And there was a trembling in the camp, in the field, and among all the people. Even the garrison and the raiderstrembled, and the earthquaked so that it became a greattrembling.
17
Saulsaid to the peoplewho were with him, "Numbernow and seewho has gone from us." And when they had numbered, behold, Jonathan and his armorbearer were not there.
19
WhileSaultalked to the priest, the commotion in the camp of the Philistinescontinued and increased; so Saulsaid to the priest, "Withdraw your hand."
20
Then Saul and all the peoplewho were with him rallied and came to the battle; and behold, everyman'ssword was against his fellow, and there was verygreatconfusion.
21
Now the Hebrews who were with the Philistinespreviously, whowent up with them allaround in the camp, even they also turned to be with the Israeliteswho were with Saul and Jonathan.
22
When all the men of Israel who had hidden themselves in the hillcountry of Ephraimheard that the Philistines had fled, even they alsopursued them closely in the battle.
24
Now the men of Israel were hard-pressed on that day, for Saul had put the peopleunderoath, saying, "Cursed be the manwhoeatsfoodbeforeevening, and until I have avenged myself on my enemies." So none* of the peopletastedfood.
27
But Jonathan had not heard when his fatherput the peopleunderoath; therefore, he put out the end of the staff that was in his hand and dipped it in the honeycomb*, and put his hand to his mouth, and his eyesbrightened.
30
"Howmuch*more*, if only the people had eatenfreelytoday of the spoil of their enemieswhich they found! For now the slaughter among the Philistines has not been great."
33
Then they toldSaul, saying, "Behold, the people are sinning against the LORD by eating with the blood." And he said, "You have actedtreacherously; roll a greatstone to me today."
34
Saulsaid, "Disperseyourselves among the people and say to them, 'Eachone of you bring me his ox or his sheep, and slaughter it here and eat; and do not sin against the LORD by eating with the blood.' " So all the people that nightbroughteachone his ox with him and slaughtered it there.
36
Then Saulsaid, "Let us godownafter the Philistines by night and takespoil among them until the morninglight, and let us not leave a man of them." And they said, "Dowhatever seems good to you." So the priestsaid, "Let us drawnear to Godhere."
40
Then he said to allIsrael, "You shall be on oneside and I and Jonathan my son will be on the otherside." And the peoplesaid to Saul, "Dowhat seems good to you."
43
Then Saulsaid to Jonathan, "Tell me what you have done." So Jonathantold him and said, "I indeedtasted a littlehoney with the end of the staff that was in my hand. Here I am, I must die!"
45
But the peoplesaid to Saul, "Must Jonathandie, who has broughtaboutthisgreatdeliverance in Israel? Far from it! As the LORDlives, not one hair of his head shall fall to the ground, for he has worked with Godthisday." So the peoplerescuedJonathan and he did not die.
47
Now when Saul had taken the kingdomoverIsrael, he fought against all his enemies on everyside, against Moab, the sons of Ammon, Edom, the kings of Zobah, and the Philistines; and wherever* he turned, he inflictedpunishment.
49
Now the sons of Saul were Jonathan and Ishvi and Malchi-shua; and the names of his twodaughters were these: the name of the firstbornMerab and the name of the youngerMichal.
