2 Kings 10:12 Meaning and Commentary

Ver. 12 And he arose and departed, and came to Samaria
To make a clear riddance there of all that belonged to Ahab, as at Jezreel, and abolish idolatry there:

and as he was at the shearing house in the way;
or, "the house of the binding of the shepherds", who, in shearing their sheep, bind their legs together; the Targum is,

``the house of the gathering of the shepherds;''

where they used to meet and converse together; with some it is the proper name of a place, Betheked, a country village between Jezreel and Samaria. Jerom speaks F17 of a village of this name, situated in a large plain, about fifteen miles from a place called Legion, which village he takes to be this here.

2 Kings 10:12 In-Context

10 Know then that {the word of Yahweh will not fail} which Yahweh spoke concerning the house of Ahab; Yahweh has done what he spoke by the hand of his servant Elijah.
11 Then Jehu killed all of the remainder of the house of Ahab in Jezreel, all of his leaders, his close friends, and his priests, until there was no survivor left for him.
12 Then he arose and went and came to Samaria. On the way, he was [at] Beth-Eked of the shepherds,
13 and Jehu met the brothers of Ahaziah king of Judah. He asked, "Who [are] you?" They said, "We [are] the brothers of Ahaziah; we came down for the peace of the king's children and the children of the queen."
14 Then he said, "Seize them alive!" So they seized them alive but then slaughtered them at the cistern of Beth-Eked, forty-two men. He did not allow any of them to survive.
