2 Chronicles 23:9

And thou shalt give the Levites unto Aaron and to his sons,
&c.] To be their ministers and servants:

they [are] wholly given unto him out of the children of Israel:
even all of them entirely, none excepted; the whole tribe which were not in the priestly office; those were separated from the rest of the tribes of Israel, and appointed for the service of the priests: or they were "given, given" ^F17; which is repeated not only to show that they were wholly given, as we render it, but to denote the certainty of it, that they were really given; and especially to declare the freeness of the gift; the priests had them as free gifts, nor did they pay them any thing for, their service; they were maintained another way, namely, by the tithes of the people; and indeed the priests received a tithe out of the tithe of the Levites; so far were they from contributing any thing to their support, or in consideration of the service they did them.

1 Rebelión contra Atalía
En el séptimo año del reinado de Atalía, el sacerdote Joiada decidió actuar. Se armó de valor e hizo un pacto con cinco comandantes del ejército: Azarías, hijo de Jeroham; Ismael, hijo de Johanán; Azarías, hijo de Obed; Maaseías, hijo de Adaía, y Elisafat, hijo de Zicri.

2 Estos hombres viajaron en secreto por todo Judá y convocaron a los levitas y a los jefes de clanes de todas las ciudades para que fueran a Jerusalén.

3 Entonces se reunieron frente al templo de Dios, donde hicieron un pacto solemne con Joás, el joven rey.
Joiada les dijo: «¡Aquí está el hijo del rey! ¡Ha llegado el momento para que él reine! El Señor
prometió que un descendiente de David sería nuestro rey.

4 Tienen que hacer lo siguiente: cuando ustedes, sacerdotes y levitas, empiecen el turno el día de descanso, una tercera parte de ustedes servirán como porteros;

5 otra tercera parte irá hasta el palacio real; y la otra tercera parte estará en la puerta de los Cimientos. Todos los demás deberán quedarse en los atrios del templo del Señor
