Psalm 105

1 Salmo 105
Den gracias al Señor
y proclamen su grandeza;
que todo el mundo sepa lo que él ha hecho.

2 Canten a él; sí, cántenle alabanzas;
cuéntenle a todo el mundo acerca de sus obras maravillosas.

3 Regocíjense por su santo nombre;
alégrense ustedes, los que adoran al Señor
.

4 Busquen al Señor
y a su fuerza,
búsquenlo continuamente.

5 Recuerden las maravillas y los milagros que ha realizado,
y los decretos que ha dictado,

6 ustedes, hijos de su siervo Abraham,
descendientes de Jacob, los elegidos de Dios.

7 Él es el Señor
nuestro Dios;
su justicia se ve por toda la tierra.

8 Siempre se atiene a su pacto,
al compromiso que adquirió con mil generaciones.

9 Es el pacto que hizo con Abraham
y el juramento que le hizo a Isaac.

10 Se lo confirmó a Jacob como un decreto
y al pueblo de Israel como un pacto eterno:

11 «Te daré la tierra de Canaán
como tu preciada posesión».

12 Eso lo dijo cuando eran unos pocos,
un pequeño grupo de extranjeros en Canaán.

13 Anduvieron de nación en nación,
de un reino a otro.

14 Sin embargo, él no permitió que nadie los oprimiera.
A favor de ellos, les advirtió a los reyes:

15 «No toquen a mi pueblo elegido
ni hagan daño a mis profetas».

16 Mandó hambre a la tierra de Canaán,
y cortó la provisión de alimentos.

17 Luego envió a un hombre a Egipto delante de ellos:
a José, quien fue vendido como esclavo.

18 Le lastimaron los pies con grilletes
y en el cuello le pusieron un collar de hierro.

19 Hasta que llegó el momento de cumplir sus sueños,
el Señor
puso a prueba el carácter de José.

20 Entonces el faraón mandó a buscarlo y lo puso en libertad;
el gobernante de la nación le abrió la puerta de la cárcel.

21 José quedó a cargo de toda la casa del rey;
llegó a ser el administrador de todas sus posesiones.

22 Con total libertad instruía a los asistentes del rey
y enseñaba a los consejeros del rey.

23 Luego Israel llegó a Egipto;
Jacob vivió como extranjero en la tierra de Cam.

24 Y el Señor
multiplicó a los israelitas
hasta que llegaron a ser más poderosos que sus enemigos.

25 Después puso a los egipcios en contra del pueblo de Israel,
y ellos conspiraron contra los siervos del Señor
.

26 Pero el Señor
envió a su siervo Moisés,
junto con Aarón, a quien había escogido.

27 Ellos realizaron señales asombrosas entre los egipcios,
y maravillas en la tierra de Cam.

28 El Señor
cubrió a Egipto con oscuridad,
porque los egipcios desobedecieron las órdenes de dejar ir a su pueblo.

29 Convirtió sus aguas en sangre
y envenenó a todos los peces.

30 Luego las ranas infestaron la tierra
y hasta invadieron las habitaciones del rey.

31 Cuando el Señor
habló, enjambres de moscas descendieron sobre los egipcios,
y hubo una nube de mosquitos por todo Egipto.

32 Les envió granizo en lugar de lluvia,
y destellaron relámpagos sobre la tierra.

33 Arruinó sus vides y sus higueras
y destrozó todos los árboles.

34 Habló, y vinieron oleadas de langostas,
langostas jóvenes en cantidades innumerables.

35 Se comieron todo lo verde que había en la tierra
y destruyeron todos los cultivos de los campos.

36 Después mató al hijo mayor de cada hogar egipcio,
el orgullo y la alegría de cada familia.

37 El Señor
sacó a su pueblo de Egipto, cargado de oro y de plata;
y ni una sola persona de las tribus de Israel siquiera tropezó.

38 Egipto se alegró cuando se fueron,
porque les tenía mucho miedo.

39 El Señor
desplegó una nube sobre ellos para que los cubriera
y les dio un gran fuego para que iluminara la oscuridad.

40 Ellos le pidieron carne, y él les envió codornices;
les sació el hambre con maná, pan del cielo.

41 Partió una roca, y brotó agua a chorros
que formó un río a través de la tierra árida y baldía.

42 Pues recordó la promesa sagrada
que le había hecho a su siervo Abraham.

43 Así que sacó a su pueblo de Egipto con alegría,
a sus escogidos, con gozo.

44 Les dio las tierras de las naciones paganas,
y cosecharon cultivos que otros habían sembrado.

45 Todo eso sucedió para que siguieran los decretos del Señor
y obedecieran sus enseñanzas.

Psalm 105 Commentary

Chapter 105

A solemn call to praise and serve the Lord. (1-7) His gracious dealings with Israel. (8-23) Their deliverance from Egypt, and their settlement in Canaan. (24-45)

Verses 1-7 Our devotion is here stirred up, that we may stir up ourselves to praise God. Seek his strength; that is, his grace; the strength of his Spirit to work in us that which is good, which we cannot do but by strength derived from him, for which he will be sought. Seek to have his favour to eternity, therefore continue seeking it while living in this world; for he will not only be found, but he will reward those that diligently seek him.

Verses 8-23 Let us remember the Redeemer's marvellous works, his wonders, and the judgments of his mouth. Though true Christians are few number, strangers and pilgrims upon earth, yet a far better inheritance than Canaan is made sure to them by the covenant of God; and if we have the anointing of the Holy Spirit, none can do us any harm. Afflictions are among our mercies. They prove our faith and love, they humble our pride, they wean us from the world, and quicken our prayers. Bread is the staff which supports life; when that staff is broken, the body fails and sinks to the earth. The word of God is the staff of spiritual life, the food and support of the soul: the sorest judgment is a famine of hearing the word of the Lord. Such a famine was sore in all lands when Christ appeared in the flesh; whose coming, and the blessed effect of it, are shadowed forth in the history of Joseph. At the appointed time Christ was exalted as Mediator; all the treasures of grace and salvation are at his disposal, perishing sinners come to him, and are relieved by him.

Verses 24-45 As the believer commonly thrives best in his soul when under the cross; so the church also flourishes most in true holiness, and increases in number, while under persecution. Yet instruments shall be raised up for their deliverance, and plagues may be expected by persecutors. And see the special care God took of his people in the wilderness. All the benefits bestowed on Israel as a nation, were shadows of spiritual blessings with which we are blessed in Christ Jesus. Having redeemed us with his blood, restored our souls to holiness, and set us at liberty from Satan's bondage, he guides and guards us all the way. He satisfies our souls with the bread of heaven, and the water of life from the Rock of salvation, and will bring us safely to heaven. He redeems his servants from all iniquity, and purifies them unto himself, to be a peculiar people, zealous of good works.

Chapter Summary

INTRODUCTION TO PSALM 105

This psalm was penned by David, and sung at the time when the ark was brought from the house of Obededom to the place which David had prepared for it; at least the first fifteen verses of it, the other part being probably added afterwards by the same inspired penman, as appears from 1Ch 16:1-7. The subject matter of the psalm is the special and distinguishing goodness of God to the children of Israel, and to his church and people, of which they were typical: the history of God's regard to and care of their principal ancestors, Abraham, Jacob, Joseph and of the whole body of the people, in bringing them out of Egypt, leading them through the wilderness, and settling them in the land of Canaan, is here recited, as an argument for praise and thankfulness.
