A Cura de um Endemoninhado

1 Eles atravessaram o mar e foram para a região dos gerasenos.^[a]

2 Quando Jesus desembarcou, um homem com um espírito imundo veio dos sepulcros ao seu encontro.

3 Esse homem vivia nos sepulcros, e ninguém conseguia prendê-lo, nem mesmo com correntes;

4 pois muitas vezes lhe haviam sido acorrentados pés e mãos, mas ele arrebentara as correntes e quebrara os ferros de seus pés. Ninguém era suficientemente forte para dominá-lo.

5 Noite e dia ele andava gritando e cortando-se com pedras entre os sepulcros e nas colinas.

6 Quando ele viu Jesus de longe, correu e prostrou-se diante dele

7 e gritou em alta voz: “Que queres comigo, Jesus, Filho do Deus Altíssimo? Rogo-te por Deus que não me atormentes!”

8 Pois Jesus lhe tinha dito: “Saia deste homem, espírito imundo!”

9 Então Jesus lhe perguntou: “Qual é o seu nome?”“Meu nome é Legião”, respondeu ele, “porque somos muitos”.

10 E implorava a Jesus, com insistência, que não os mandasse sair daquela região.

11 Uma grande manada de porcos estava pastando numa colina próxima.

12 Os demônios imploraram a Jesus: “Manda-nos para os porcos, para que entremos neles”.

13 Ele lhes deu permissão, e os espíritos imundos saíram e entraram nos porcos. A manada de cerca de dois mil porcos atirou-se precipício abaixo, em direção ao mar, e nele se afogou.

14 Os que cuidavam dos porcos fugiram e contaram esses fatos na cidade e nos campos, e o povo foi ver o que havia acontecido.

15 Quando se aproximaram de Jesus, viram ali o homem que fora possesso da legião de demônios, assentado, vestido e em perfeito juízo; e ficaram com medo.

16 Os que estavam presentes contaram ao povo o que acontecera ao endemoninhado e falaram também sobre os porcos.

17 Então o povo começou a suplicar a Jesus que saísse do território deles.

18 Quando Jesus estava entrando no barco, o homem que estivera endemoninhado suplicava-lhe que o deixasse ir com ele.

19 Jesus não o permitiu, mas disse: “Vá para casa, para a sua família e anuncie-lhes quanto o Senhor fez por você e como teve misericórdia de você”.

20 Então, aquele homem se foi e começou a anunciar em Decápolis o quanto Jesus tinha feito por ele. Todos ficavam admirados.

O Poder de Jesus sobre a Doença e a Morte

21 Tendo Jesus voltado de barco para a outra margem, uma grande multidão se reuniu ao seu redor, enquanto ele estava à beira do mar.

22 Então chegou ali um dos dirigentes da sinagoga, chamado Jairo. Vendo Jesus, prostrou-se aos seus pés

23 e lhe implorou insistentemente: “Minha filhinha está morrendo! Vem, por favor, e impõe as mãos sobre ela, para que seja curada e que viva”.

24 Jesus foi com ele.Uma grande multidão o seguia e o comprimia.

25 E estava ali certa mulher que havia doze anos vinha sofrendo de hemorragia.

26 Ela padecera muito sob o cuidado de vários médicos e gastara tudo o que tinha, mas, em vez de melhorar, piorava.

27 Quando ouviu falar de Jesus, chegou por trás dele, no meio da multidão, e tocou em seu manto,

28 porque pensava: “Se eu tão somente tocar em seu manto, ficarei curada”.

29 Imediatamente cessou sua hemorragia e ela sentiu em seu corpo que estava livre do seu sofrimento.

30 No mesmo instante, Jesus percebeu que dele havia saído poder, virou-se para a multidão e perguntou: “Quem tocou em meu manto?”

31 Responderam os seus discípulos: “Vês a multidão aglomerada ao teu redor e ainda perguntas: ‘Quem tocou em mim?’ ”

32 Mas Jesus continuou olhando ao seu redor para ver quem tinha feito aquilo.

33 Então a mulher, sabendo o que lhe tinha acontecido, aproximou-se, prostrou-se aos seus pés e, tremendo de medo, contou-lhe toda a verdade.

34 Então ele lhe disse: “Filha, a sua fé a curou!^[b] Vá em paz e fique livre do seu sofrimento”.

35 Enquanto Jesus ainda estava falando, chegaram algumas pessoas da casa de Jairo, o dirigente da sinagoga. “Sua filha morreu”, disseram eles. “Não precisa mais incomodar o mestre!”

36 Não fazendo caso do que eles disseram, Jesus disse ao dirigente da sinagoga: “Não tenha medo; tão somente creia”.

37 E não deixou ninguém segui-lo, senão Pedro, Tiago e João, irmão de Tiago.

38 Quando chegaram à casa do dirigente da sinagoga, Jesus viu um alvoroço, com gente chorando e se lamentando em alta voz.

39 Então entrou e lhes disse: “Por que todo este alvoroço e lamento? A criança não está morta, mas dorme”.

40 Mas todos começaram a rir de Jesus. Ele, porém, ordenou que eles saíssem, tomou consigo o pai e a mãe da criança e os discípulos que estavam com ele e entrou onde se encontrava a criança.

41 Tomou-a pela mão e lhe disse: “Talita cumi!”, que significa “menina, eu ordeno a você, levante-se!”.

42 Imediatamente a menina, que tinha doze anos de idade, levantou-se e começou a andar. Isso os deixou atônitos.

43 Ele deu ordens expressas para que não dissessem nada a ninguém e mandou que dessem a ela alguma coisa para comer.

Chapter 5

The demoniac healed. (1-20) A woman healed. (21-34) The daughter of Jairus raised. (35-43)

Verses 1-20 Some openly wilful sinners are like this madman. The commands of the law are as chains and fetters, to restrain sinners from their wicked courses; but they break those bands in sunder; and it is an evidence of the power of the devil in them. A legion of soldiers consisted of six thousand men, or more. What multitudes of fallen spirits there must be, and all enemies to God and man, when here was a legion in one poor wretched creature! Many there are that rise up against us. We are not a match for our spiritual enemies, in our own strength; but in the Lord, and in the power of his might, we shall be able to stand against them, though there are legions of them. When the vilest transgressor is delivered by the power of Jesus from the bondage of Satan, he will gladly sit at the feet of his Deliverer, and hear his word, who delivers the wretched slaves of Satan, and numbers them among his saints and servants. When the people found that their swine were lost, they had a dislike to Christ. Long-suffering and mercy may be seen, even in the corrections by which men lose their property while their lives are saved, and warning given them to seek the salvation of their souls. The man joyfully proclaimed what great things Jesus had done for him. All men marvelled, but few followed him. Many who cannot but wonder at the works of Christ, yet do not, as they ought, wonder after him.

Verses 21-34 A despised gospel will go where it will be better received. One of the rulers of a synagogue earnestly besought Christ for a little daughter, about twelve years old, who was dying. Another cure was wrought by the way. We should do good, not only when in the house, but when we walk by the way, De. 6:7 . It is common with people not to apply to Christ till they have tried in vain all other helpers, and find them, as certainly they will, physicians of no value. Some run to diversions and gay company; others plunge into business, or even into intemperance; others go about to establish their own righteousness, or torment themselves by vain superstitions. Many perish in these ways; but none will ever find rest to the soul by such devices; while those whom Christ heals of the disease of sin, find in themselves an entire change for the better. As secret acts of sin, so secret acts of faith, are known to the Lord Jesus. The woman told all the truth. It is the will of Christ that his people should be comforted, and he has power to command comfort to troubled spirits. The more simply we depend on Him, and expect great things from him, the more we shall find in ourselves that he is become our salvation. Those who, by faith, are healed of their spiritual diseases, have reason to go in peace.

Verses 35-43 We may suppose Jairus hesitating whether he should ask Christ to go on or not, when told that his daughter was dead. But have we not as much occasion for the grace of God, and the comfort of his Spirit, for the prayers of our ministers and Christian friends, when death is in the house, as when sickness is there? Faith is the only remedy against grief and fear at such a time. Believe the resurrection, then fear not. He raised the dead child to life by a word of power. Such is the gospel call to those who are by nature dead in trespasses and sins. It is by the word of Christ that spiritual life is given. All who saw it, and heard of it, admired the miracle, and Him that wrought it. Though we cannot now expect to have our dead children or relatives restored, we may hope to find comfort under our trials.
