Lamentação por Nínive

1 Ai da cidade sanguinária,repleta de fraudes e cheia de roubos,sempre fazendo as suas vítimas!

2 Ah, o estalo dos chicotes,o barulho das rodas,o galope dos cavalose o sacudir dos carros de guerra!

3 Cavaleiros atacando,espadas reluzentese lanças cintilantes!Muitos mortos,montanhas de cadáveres,corpos sem conta,gente tropeçando por cima deles!

4 Tudo por causa do desejo desenfreado de uma prostituta sedutora,mestra de feitiçariasque escravizou nações com a sua prostituiçãoe povos com a sua feitiçaria.

5 “Eu estou contra você”, declara o SENHOR dos Exércitos;“vou levantar o seu vestido até a altura do seu rosto.Mostrarei às nações a sua nudeze aos reinos, as suas vergonhas.

6 Eu jogarei imundície sobre você,e a tratarei com desprezo;farei de você um exemplo.

7 Todos os que a virem fugirão, dizendo:‘Nínive está arrasada! Quem a lamentará?’Onde encontrarei quem a console?”

8 Acaso você é melhor do que Tebas,^[a]situada junto ao Nilo,rodeada de águas?O rio era a sua defesa;as águas, o seu muro.

9 A Etiópia^[b] e o Egito eram a sua força ilimitada;Fute e a Líbia estavam entre os seus aliados.

10 Apesar disso, ela foi deportada,levada para o exílio.Em todas as esquinasas suas crianças foram massacradas.Lançaram sortes para decidir o destino dos seus nobres;todos os poderosos foram acorrentados.

11 Você também ficará embriagada;irá esconder-se,tentando proteger-se do inimigo.

12 Todas as suas fortalezas são como figueirascarregadas de figos maduros;basta sacudi-las,e os figos caem em bocas vorazes.

13 Olhe bem para as suas tropas:não passam de mulheres!As suas portas estão escancaradaspara os seus inimigos;o fogo devorou as suas trancas.

14 Reserve água para o tempo do cerco!Reforce as suas fortalezas!Entre no barro, pise a argamassa,prepare a forma para os tijolos!

15 Mesmo assim o fogo consumirá você;a espada a eliminará,e, como gafanhotos devastadores, a devorará!Multiplique-se como gafanhotos devastadores,multiplique-se como gafanhotos peregrinos!

16 Você multiplicou os seus comerciantes,tornando-os mais numerosos que as estrelas do céu;mas como gafanhotos devastadores, eles devoram o paíse depois voam para longe.

17 Os seus guardas são como gafanhotos peregrinos;os seus oficiais, como enxames de gafanhotosque se ajuntam sobre os muros em dias frios;mas, quando o sol aparece, eles voam,ninguém sabe para onde.

18 Ó rei da Assíria, os seus pastores^[c] dormem;os seus nobres adormecem.O seu povo está espalhado pelos montese não há ninguém para reuni-lo.

19 Não há cura para a sua chaga;a sua ferida é mortal.Quem ouve notícias a seu respeitobate palmas pela sua queda,pois, quem não sofreu porsua crueldade sem limites?

Naum 3 Commentary

Chapter 3

The sins and judgments of Nineveh. (1-7) Its utter destruction. (8-19)

Verses 1-7 When proud sinners are brought down, others should learn not to lift themselves up. The fall of this great city should be a lesson to private persons, who increase wealth by fraud and oppression. They are preparing enemies for themselves; and if the Lord sees good to punish them in this world, they will have none to pity them. Every man who seeks his own prosperity, safety, and peace, should not only act in an upright, honourable manner, but with kindness to all.

Verses 8-19 Strong-holds, even the strongest, are no defence against the judgments of God. They shall be unable to do any thing for themselves. The Chaldeans and Medes would devour the land like canker-worms. The Assyrians also would be eaten up by their own numerous hired troops, which seem to be meant by the word rendered "merchants." Those that have done evil to their neighbours, will find it come home to them. Nineveh, and many other cities, states, and empires, have been ruined, and should be a warning to us. Are we better, except as there are some true Christians amongst us, who are a greater security, and a stronger defence, than all the advantages of situation or strength? When the Lord shows himself against a people, every thing they trust in must fail, or prove a disadvantage; but he continues good to Israel. He is a strong-hold for every believer in time of trouble, that cannot be stormed or taken; and he knoweth those that trust in Him.

INTRODUCTION TO NAHUM 3

In this chapter is contained the prophecy of the destruction of Nineveh, and with it the whole Assyrian empire; the causes of which, besides those before mentioned, were the murders, lies, and robberies it was full of, Na 3:1 for which it should be swiftly and cruelly destroyed, Na 3:2,3 as also its whoredoms and witchcrafts, or idolatry, by which nations and families were seduced, Na 3:4 and hence she should be treated as a harlot, her nakedness exposed, and she cast out with contempt, and mocked at by all, Na 3:5-7 and all those things she placed her confidence in are shown to be of no avail; as her situation and fortresses, as she might learn from the case of No Amon, Na 3:8-12 nor the number of her inhabitants, which were weak as women; nor even her merchants, captains, nobles, and king himself, Na 3:13-18 nor the people she was in alliance with, who would now mock at her, her case being irrecoverable and incurable, Na 3:19.
