5 The inhabitants of Jebus said to David, "You will not come in here." Nevertheless David took the stronghold of Zion, now the city of David.

said to David, “You will not get in here.” Nevertheless, David captured the fortress of Zion—which is the City of David.
6 David had said, "Whoever attacks the Jebusites first shall be chief and commander." And Joab son of Zeruiah went up first, so he became chief.

David had said, “Whoever leads the attack on the Jebusites will become commander-in-chief.” Joab son of Zeruiah went up first, and so he received the command.
7 David resided in the stronghold; therefore it was called the city of David.

David then took up residence in the fortress, and so it was called the City of David.
8 He built the city all around, from the Millo in complete circuit; and Joab repaired the rest of the city.

He built up the city around it, from the terraces to the surrounding wall, while Joab restored the rest of the city.
9 And David became greater and greater, for the Lord of hosts was with him.

And David became more and more powerful, because the LORD Almighty was with him.
