19 Ai suoi tempi Pul, re d’Assiria, fece invasione nel paese; e Menahem diede a Pul mille talenti d’argento affinché gli desse man forte per assicurare nelle sue mani il potere reale.

Then Pul king of Assyria invaded the land, and Menahem gave him a thousand talents of silver to gain his support and strengthen his own hold on the kingdom.
20 E Menahem fece pagare quel danaro ad Israele, a tutti quelli ch’erano molto ricchi, per darlo al re d’Assiria; li tassò a ragione di cinquanta sicli d’argento a testa. Così il re d’Assiria se ne tornò via, e non si fermò nel paese.

Menahem exacted this money from Israel. Every wealthy person had to contribute fifty shekels of silver to be given to the king of Assyria. So the king of Assyria withdrew and stayed in the land no longer.
