2 Samuel 22

CSB 1 David spoke the words of this song to the Lord on the day the Lord rescued him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. NIV 1 David sang to the LORD the words of this song when the LORD delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. CSB 2 He said: The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer, NIV 2 He said: “The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; CSB 3 my God, my mountain where I seek refuge. My shield, the horn of my salvation, my stronghold, my refuge, and my Savior, You save me from violence. NIV 3 my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation. He is my stronghold, my refuge and my savior— from violent people you save me. CSB 4 I called to the Lord, who is worthy of praise, and I was saved from my enemies. NIV 4 “I called to the LORD, who is worthy of praise, and have been saved from my enemies. CSB 5 For the waves of death engulfed me; the torrents of destruction terrified me. NIV 5 The waves of death swirled about me; the torrents of destruction overwhelmed me. CSB 6 The ropes of Sheol entangled me; the snares of death confronted me. NIV 6 The cords of the grave coiled around me; the snares of death confronted me. CSB 7 I called to the Lord in my distress; I called to my God. From His temple He heard my voice, and my cry for help [reached] His ears. NIV 7 “In my distress I called to the LORD; I called out to my God. From his temple he heard my voice; my cry came to his ears. CSB 8 Then the earth shook and quaked; the foundations of the heavens trembled; they shook because He burned with anger. NIV 8 The earth trembled and quaked, the foundations of the heavens shook; they trembled because he was angry. CSB 9 Smoke rose from His nostrils, and consuming fire [came] from His mouth; coals were set ablaze by it. NIV 9 Smoke rose from his nostrils; consuming fire came from his mouth, burning coals blazed out of it. CSB 10 He parted the heavens and came down, a dark cloud beneath His feet. NIV 10 He parted the heavens and came down; dark clouds were under his feet. CSB 11 He rode on a cherub and flew, soaring on the wings of the wind. NIV 11 He mounted the cherubim and flew; he soared on the wings of the wind. CSB 12 He made darkness a canopy around Him, a gathering of water and thick clouds. NIV 12 He made darkness his canopy around him— the dark rain clouds of the sky. CSB 13 From the radiance of His presence, flaming coals were ignited. NIV 13 Out of the brightness of his presence bolts of lightning blazed forth. CSB 14 The Lord thundered from heaven; the Most High projected His voice. NIV 14 The LORD thundered from heaven; the voice of the Most High resounded. CSB 15 He shot arrows and scattered them; [He hurled] lightning bolts and routed them. NIV 15 He shot his arrows and scattered the enemy, with great bolts of lightning he routed them. CSB 16 The depths of the sea became visible, the foundations of the world were exposed at the rebuke of the Lord, at the blast of the breath of His nostrils. NIV 16 The valleys of the sea were exposed and the foundations of the earth laid bare at the rebuke of the LORD, at the blast of breath from his nostrils. CSB 17 He reached down from on high and took hold of me; He pulled me out of deep waters. NIV 17 “He reached down from on high and took hold of me; he drew me out of deep waters. CSB 18 He rescued me from my powerful enemy and from those who hated me, for they were too strong for me. NIV 18 He rescued me from my powerful enemy, from my foes, who were too strong for me. CSB 19 They confronted me in the day of my distress, but the Lord was my support. NIV 19 They confronted me in the day of my disaster, but the LORD was my support. CSB 20 He brought me out to a wide-open place; He rescued me because He delighted in me. NIV 20 He brought me out into a spacious place; he rescued me because he delighted in me. CSB 21 The Lord rewarded me according to my righteousness; He repaid me according to the cleanness of my hands. NIV 21 “The LORD has dealt with me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands he has rewarded me. CSB 22 For I have kept the ways of the Lord and have not turned from my God to wickedness. NIV 22 For I have kept the ways of the LORD; I am not guilty of turning from my God. CSB 23 Indeed, I have kept all His ordinances in mind and have not disregarded His statutes. NIV 23 All his laws are before me; I have not turned away from his decrees. CSB 24 I was blameless before Him and kept myself from sinning. NIV 24 I have been blameless before him and have kept myself from sin. CSB 25 So the Lord repaid me according to my righteousness, according to my cleanness in His sight. NIV 25 The LORD has rewarded me according to my righteousness, according to my cleanness in his sight. CSB 26 With the faithful You prove Yourself faithful; with the blameless man You prove Yourself blameless; NIV 26 “To the faithful you show yourself faithful, to the blameless you show yourself blameless, CSB 27 with the pure You prove Yourself pure, but with the crooked You prove Yourself shrewd. NIV 27 to the pure you show yourself pure, but to the devious you show yourself shrewd. CSB 28 You rescue an afflicted people, but Your eyes are set against the proud- You humble them. NIV 28 You save the humble, but your eyes are on the haughty to bring them low. CSB 29 Lord, You are my lamp; the Lord illuminates my darkness. NIV 29 You, LORD, are my lamp; the LORD turns my darkness into light. CSB 30 With You I can attack a barrier, and with my God I can leap over a wall. NIV 30 With your help I can advance against a troop ; with my God I can scale a wall. CSB 31 God-His way is perfect; the word of the Lord is pure. He is a shield to all who take refuge in Him. NIV 31 “As for God, his way is perfect: The LORD’s word is flawless; he shields all who take refuge in him. CSB 32 For who is God besides the Lord? And who is a rock? Only our God. NIV 32 For who is God besides the LORD? And who is the Rock except our God? CSB 33 God is my strong refuge; He makes my way perfect. NIV 33 It is God who arms me with strength and keeps my way secure. CSB 34 He makes my feet like [the feet of] a deer and sets me securely on the heights. NIV 34 He makes my feet like the feet of a deer; he causes me to stand on the heights. CSB 35 He trains my hands for war; my arms can bend a bow of bronze. NIV 35 He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend a bow of bronze. CSB 36 You have given me the shield of Your salvation; Your help exalts me. NIV 36 You make your saving help my shield; your help has made me great. CSB 37 You widen [a place] beneath me for my steps, and my ankles do not give way. NIV 37 You provide a broad path for my feet, so that my ankles do not give way. CSB 38 I pursue my enemies and destroy them; I do not turn back until they are wiped out. NIV 38 “I pursued my enemies and crushed them; I did not turn back till they were destroyed. CSB 39 I wipe them out and crush them, and they do not rise; they fall beneath my feet. NIV 39 I crushed them completely, and they could not rise; they fell beneath my feet. CSB 40 You have clothed me with strength for battle; You subdue my adversaries beneath me. NIV 40 You armed me with strength for battle; you humbled my adversaries before me. CSB 41 You have made my enemies retreat before me; I annihilate those who hated me. NIV 41 You made my enemies turn their backs in flight, and I destroyed my foes. CSB 42 They look, but there is no one to save [them]- [they look] to the Lord, but He does not answer them. NIV 42 They cried for help, but there was no one to save them— to the LORD, but he did not answer. CSB 43 I pulverize them like dust of the earth; I crush them and trample them like mud in the streets. NIV 43 I beat them as fine as the dust of the earth; I pounded and trampled them like mud in the streets. CSB 44 You have freed me from the feuds among my people; You have appointed me the head of nations; a people I had not known serve me. NIV 44 “You have delivered me from the attacks of the peoples; you have preserved me as the head of nations. People I did not know now serve me, CSB 45 Foreigners submit to me grudgingly; as soon as they hear, they obey me. NIV 45 foreigners cower before me; as soon as they hear of me, they obey me. CSB 46 Foreigners lose heart and come trembling from their fortifications. NIV 46 They all lose heart; they come trembling from their strongholds. CSB 47 The Lord lives-may my rock be praised! God, the rock of my salvation, is exalted. NIV 47 “The LORD lives! Praise be to my Rock! Exalted be my God, the Rock, my Savior! CSB 48 God-He gives me vengeance and casts down peoples under me. NIV 48 He is the God who avenges me, who puts the nations under me, CSB 49 He frees me from my enemies. You exalt me above my adversaries; You rescue me from violent men. NIV 49 who sets me free from my enemies. You exalted me above my foes; from a violent man you rescued me. CSB 50 Therefore I will praise You, Lord, among the nations; I will sing about Your name. NIV 50 Therefore I will praise you, LORD, among the nations; I will sing the praises of your name. CSB 51 He is a tower of salvation for His king; He shows loyalty to His anointed, to David and his descendants forever. NIV 51 “He gives his king great victories; he shows unfailing kindness to his anointed, to David and his descendants forever.”
