8 da ging Ebed-Melech aus des Königs Hause und redete mit dem König und sprach:

9 Mein Herr König, die Männer handeln übel an dem Propheten Jeremia, daß sie ihn haben in die Grube geworfen, da er muß Hungers sterben; denn es ist kein Brot mehr in der Stadt.

10 Da befahl der König Ebed-Melech, dem Mohren, und sprach: Nimm dreißig Männer mit dir von diesen und zieh den Propheten Jeremia aus der Grube, ehe denn er sterbe.

11 Und Ebed-Melech nahm die Männer mit sich und ging in des Königs Haus unter die Schatzkammer und nahm daselbst zerrissene und vertragene alte Lumpen und ließ sie an einem Seil hinab zu Jeremia in die Grube.

12 Und Ebed-Melech, der Mohr, sprach zu Jeremia: Lege diese zerrissenen und vertragenen alten Lumpen unter deine Achseln um das Seil. Und Jeremia tat also.

13 Und sie zogen Jeremia herauf aus der Grube an den Stricken; und blieb also Jeremia im Vorhof des Gefängnisses.

14 Und der König Zedekia sandte hin und ließ den Propheten Jeremia zu sich holen unter den dritten Eingang am Hause des HERRN. Und der König sprach zu Jeremia: Ich will dich etwas fragen; verhalte mir nichts.

15 Jeremia sprach zu Zedekia: Sage ich dir etwas, so tötest du mich doch; gebe ich dir aber einen Rat, so gehorchst du mir nicht.

16 Da schwur der König Zedekia dem Jeremia heimlich und sprach: So wahr der HERR lebt, der uns dieses Leben gegeben hat, so will ich dich nicht töten noch den Männern in die Hände geben, die dir nach dem Leben stehen.

17 Und Jeremia sprach zu Zedekia: So spricht der HERR, der Gott Zebaoth, der Gott Israels: Wirst du hinausgehen zu den Fürsten des Königs zu Babel, so sollst du leben bleiben, und diese Stadt soll nicht verbrannt werden, sondern du und dein Haus sollen am Leben bleiben;

18 wirst du aber nicht hinausgehen zu den Fürsten des Königs zu Babel, so wird diese Stadt den Chaldäern in die Hände gegeben, und sie werden sie mit Feuer verbrennen, und du wirst auch nicht ihren Händen entrinnen.

8 Ebed-Melek went out of the palace and said to him,

9 “My lord the king, these men have acted wickedly in all they have done to Jeremiah the prophet. They have thrown him into a cistern, where he will starve to death when there is no longer any bread in the city.”

10 Then the king commanded Ebed-Melek the Cushite, “Take thirty men from here with you and lift Jeremiah the prophet out of the cistern before he dies.”

11 So Ebed-Melek took the men with him and went to a room under the treasury in the palace. He took some old rags and worn-out clothes from there and let them down with ropes to Jeremiah in the cistern.

12 Ebed-Melek the Cushite said to Jeremiah, “Put these old rags and worn-out clothes under your arms to pad the ropes.” Jeremiah did so,

13 and they pulled him up with the ropes and lifted him out of the cistern. And Jeremiah remained in the courtyard of the guard.

14 Then King Zedekiah sent for Jeremiah the prophet and had him brought to the third entrance to the temple of the LORD. “I am going to ask you something,” the king said to Jeremiah. “Do not hide anything from me.”

15 Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, “If I give you an answer, will you not kill me? Even if I did give you counsel, you would not listen to me.”

16 But King Zedekiah swore this oath secretly to Jeremiah: “As surely as the LORD lives, who has given us breath, I will neither kill you nor hand you over to those who want to kill you.”

17 Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, “This is what the LORD God Almighty, the God of Israel, says: ‘If you surrender to the officers of the king of Babylon, your life will be spared and this city will not be burned down; you and your family will live.

18 But if you will not surrender to the officers of the king of Babylon, this city will be given into the hands of the Babylonians and they will burn it down; you yourself will not escape from them.’ ”
