John 7

KJVA 1 After these things Jesus walked in Galilee: for he would not walk in Jewry, because the Jews sought to kill him. NIV 1 After this, Jesus went around in Galilee. He did not want to go about in Judea because the Jewish leaders there were looking for a way to kill him. KJVA 2 Now the Jews' feast of tabernacles was at hand. NIV 2 But when the Jewish Festival of Tabernacles was near, KJVA 3 His brethren therefore said unto him, Depart hence, and go into Judaea, that thy disciples also may see the works that thou doest . NIV 3 Jesus’ brothers said to him, “Leave Galilee and go to Judea, so that your disciples there may see the works you do. KJVA 4 For there is no man that doeth any thing in secret, and he himself seeketh to be known openly . If thou do these things, shew thyself to the world. NIV 4 No one who wants to become a public figure acts in secret. Since you are doing these things, show yourself to the world.” KJVA 5 For neither did his brethren believe in him. NIV 5 For even his own brothers did not believe in him. KJVA 6 Then Jesus said unto them, My time is not yet come : but your time is alway ready. NIV 6 Therefore Jesus told them, “My time is not yet here; for you any time will do. KJVA 7 The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth , because I testify of it, that the works thereof are evil. NIV 7 The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify that its works are evil. KJVA 8 Go ye up unto this feast: I go not up yet unto this feast; for my time is not yet full come . NIV 8 You go to the festival. I am not going up to this festival, because my time has not yet fully come.” KJVA 9 When he had said these words unto them, he abode still in Galilee. NIV 9 After he had said this, he stayed in Galilee. KJVA 10 But when his brethren were gone up , then went he also up unto the feast, not openly, but as it were in secret. NIV 10 However, after his brothers had left for the festival, he went also, not publicly, but in secret. KJVA 11 Then the Jews sought him at the feast, and said , Where is he? NIV 11 Now at the festival the Jewish leaders were watching for Jesus and asking, “Where is he?” KJVA 12 And there was much murmuring among the people concerning him: for some said , He is a good man: others said , Nay; but he deceiveth the people. NIV 12 Among the crowds there was widespread whispering about him. Some said, “He is a good man.” Others replied, “No, he deceives the people.” KJVA 13 Howbeit no man spake openly of him for fear of the Jews. NIV 13 But no one would say anything publicly about him for fear of the leaders. KJVA 14 Now about the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and taught . NIV 14 Not until halfway through the festival did Jesus go up to the temple courts and begin to teach. KJVA 15 And the Jews marvelled , saying , How knoweth this man letters, having never learned ? NIV 15 The Jews there were amazed and asked, “How did this man get such learning without having been taught?” KJVA 16 Jesus answered them, and said , My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me. NIV 16 Jesus answered, “My teaching is not my own. It comes from the one who sent me. KJVA 17 If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself. NIV 17 Anyone who chooses to do the will of God will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own. KJVA 18 He that speaketh of himself seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh his glory that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him. NIV 18 Whoever speaks on their own does so to gain personal glory, but he who seeks the glory of the one who sent him is a man of truth; there is nothing false about him. KJVA 19 Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law? Why go ye about to kill me? NIV 19 Has not Moses given you the law? Yet not one of you keeps the law. Why are you trying to kill me?” KJVA 20 The people answered and said , Thou hast a devil: who goeth about to kill thee? NIV 20 “You are demon-possessed,” the crowd answered. “Who is trying to kill you?” KJVA 21 Jesus answered and said unto them, I have done one work, and ye all marvel . NIV 21 Jesus said to them, “I did one miracle, and you are all amazed. KJVA 22 Moses therefore gave unto you circumcision; (not because it is of Moses, but of the fathers;) and ye on the sabbath day circumcise a man. NIV 22 Yet, because Moses gave you circumcision (though actually it did not come from Moses, but from the patriarchs), you circumcise a boy on the Sabbath. KJVA 23 If a man on the sabbath day receive circumcision, that the law of Moses should not be broken ; are ye angry at me, because I have made a man every whit whole on the sabbath day? NIV 23 Now if a boy can be circumcised on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses may not be broken, why are you angry with me for healing a man’s whole body on the Sabbath? KJVA 24 Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment. NIV 24 Stop judging by mere appearances, but instead judge correctly.” KJVA 25 Then said some of them of Jerusalem, Is not this he, whom they seek to kill ? NIV 25 At that point some of the people of Jerusalem began to ask, “Isn’t this the man they are trying to kill? KJVA 26 But, lo, he speaketh boldly, and they say nothing unto him. Do the rulers know indeed that this is the very Christ? NIV 26 Here he is, speaking publicly, and they are not saying a word to him. Have the authorities really concluded that he is the Messiah? KJVA 27 Howbeit we know this man whence he is : but when Christ cometh , no man knoweth whence he is . NIV 27 But we know where this man is from; when the Messiah comes, no one will know where he is from.” KJVA 28 Then cried Jesus in the temple as he taught , saying , Ye both know me , and ye know whence I am : and I am not come of myself, but he that sent me is true, whom ye know not. NIV 28 Then Jesus, still teaching in the temple courts, cried out, “Yes, you know me, and you know where I am from. I am not here on my own authority, but he who sent me is true. You do not know him, KJVA 29 But I know him: for I am from him, and he hath sent me. NIV 29 but I know him because I am from him and he sent me.” KJVA 30 Then they sought to take him: but no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come . NIV 30 At this they tried to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come. KJVA 31 And many of the people believed on him, and said , When Christ cometh , will he do more miracles than these which this man hath done ? NIV 31 Still, many in the crowd believed in him. They said, “When the Messiah comes, will he perform more signs than this man?” KJVA 32 The Pharisees heard that the people murmured such things concerning him; and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers to take him. NIV 32 The Pharisees heard the crowd whispering such things about him. Then the chief priests and the Pharisees sent temple guards to arrest him. KJVA 33 Then said Jesus unto them, Yet a little while am I with you, and then I go unto him that sent me. NIV 33 Jesus said, “I am with you for only a short time, and then I am going to the one who sent me. KJVA 34 Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am , thither ye cannot come . NIV 34 You will look for me, but you will not find me; and where I am, you cannot come.” KJVA 35 Then said the Jews among themselves, Whither will he go , that we shall not find him? will he go unto the dispersed among the Gentiles, and teach the Gentiles? NIV 35 The Jews said to one another, “Where does this man intend to go that we cannot find him? Will he go where our people live scattered among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks? KJVA 36 What manner of saying is this that he said , Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am , thither ye cannot come ? NIV 36 What did he mean when he said, ‘You will look for me, but you will not find me,’ and ‘Where I am, you cannot come’?” KJVA 37 In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried , saying , If any man thirst , let him come unto me, and drink . NIV 37 On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. KJVA 38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said , out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. NIV 38 Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” KJVA 39 (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive : for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified .) NIV 39 By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified. KJVA 40 Many of the people therefore, when they heard this saying, said , Of a truth this is the Prophet. NIV 40 On hearing his words, some of the people said, “Surely this man is the Prophet.” KJVA 41 Others said , This is the Christ. But some said , Shall Christ come out of Galilee? NIV 41 Others said, “He is the Messiah.” Still others asked, “How can the Messiah come from Galilee? KJVA 42 Hath not the scripture said , That Christ cometh of the seed of David, and out of the town of Bethlehem, where David was ? NIV 42 Does not Scripture say that the Messiah will come from David’s descendants and from Bethlehem, the town where David lived?” KJVA 43 So there was a division among the people because of him. NIV 43 Thus the people were divided because of Jesus. KJVA 44 And some of them would have taken him; but no man laid hands on him. NIV 44 Some wanted to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him. KJVA 45 Then came the officers to the chief priests and Pharisees; and they said unto them, Why have ye not brought him? NIV 45 Finally the temple guards went back to the chief priests and the Pharisees, who asked them, “Why didn’t you bring him in?” KJVA 46 The officers answered , Never man spake like this man. NIV 46 “No one ever spoke the way this man does,” the guards replied. KJVA 47 Then answered them the Pharisees, Are ye also deceived ? NIV 47 “You mean he has deceived you also?” the Pharisees retorted. KJVA 48 Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed on him? NIV 48 “Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed in him? KJVA 49 But this people who knoweth not the law are cursed. NIV 49 No! But this mob that knows nothing of the law—there is a curse on them.” KJVA 50 Nicodemus saith unto them, (he that came to Jesus by night, being one of them,) NIV 50 Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus earlier and who was one of their own number, asked, KJVA 51 Doth our law judge any man, before it hear him, and know what he doeth ? NIV 51 “Does our law condemn a man without first hearing him to find out what he has been doing?” KJVA 52 They answered and said unto him, Art thou also of Galilee? Search , and look: for out of Galilee ariseth no prophet. NIV 52 They replied, “Are you from Galilee, too? Look into it, and you will find that a prophet does not come out of Galilee.” KJVA 53 And every man went unto his own house. NIV 53 Then they all went home,
