37 Così tutto il popolo e tutto Israele riconobbero in quel giorno che il re non entrava per nulla nell’uccisione di Abner, figliuolo di Ner.

2 Samuel 3:37

For all the people and all Israel understood that day
Not the people of Judah only, but of Israel also, to whom the knowledge of these things came; they knew and were satisfied by his conduct and behaviour, by his words and actions:

that it was not of the king to slay Abner the son of Ner;
it was not by the counsel or advice of the king, as the Targum; it was without his knowledge and consent, was contrary to his mind and will; that he had no manner of concern in it, and that if it had been in his power he would have prevented it.

35 E tutto il popolo ricominciò a piangere Abner; poi s’accostò a Davide per fargli prender qualche cibo mentr’era ancora giorno; ma Davide giurò dicendo: "Mi tratti Iddio con tutto il suo rigore se assaggerò pane o alcun’altra cosa prima che tramonti il sole!"
36 E tutto il popolo capì e approvò la cosa; tutto quello che il re fece fu approvato da tutto il popolo.
37 Così tutto il popolo e tutto Israele riconobbero in quel giorno che il re non entrava per nulla nell’uccisione di Abner, figliuolo di Ner.
38 E il re disse ai suoi servi: "Non sapete voi che un principe ed un grand’uomo è caduto oggi in Israele?
39 Quanto a me, benché unto re, sono tuttora debole; mentre questa gente, i figliuoli di Tseruia, son troppo forti per me. Renda l’Eterno a chi fa il male secondo la malvagità di lui".
