Jeremiah 8:4

Moreover, thou shalt say unto them
The Jews, in Jeremiah's time, in order to leave them inexcusable, though the Lord had before assured that they would not hearken to him, ( Jeremiah 7:27 ) : thus saith the Lord, shall they fall, and not rise?
men, when they fall, endeavour to get up again, and generally they do: shall he turn away, and not return?
when a man turns out of the right way into a wrong one, as soon as he is sensible of his mistake, he returns back; this is usually done among men. This is generally the case in a natural sense, and might be expected in a moral sense; that whereas these people had fallen into sin, they would rise again by repentance; and, having turned from the good ways of God, would soon return again to them.

2 e le si esporranno dinanzi al sole, dinanzi alla luna e dinanzi a tutto l’esercito del cielo, i quali essi hanno amato, hanno servito, hanno seguito, hanno consultato, e dinanzi ai quali si sono prostrati; non si raccoglieranno, non si seppelliranno, ma saranno come letame sulla faccia della terra.

3 E la morte sarà preferibile alla vita per tutto il residuo che rimarrà di questa razza malvagia, in tutti i luoghi dove li avrò cacciati, dice l’Eterno degli eserciti.

4 E tu di’ loro: Così parla l’Eterno: Se uno cade non si rialza forse? Se uno si svia, non torna egli indietro?

5 Perché dunque questo popolo di Gerusalemme si svia egli d’uno sviamento perpetuo? Essi persistono nella malafede, e rifiutano di convertirsi.

6 Io sto attento ed ascolto: essi non parlano come dovrebbero; nessuno si pente della sua malvagità e dice: "Che ho io fatto?" Ognuno riprende la sua corsa, come il cavallo che si slancia alla battaglia.
