1 Reyes 13

1 Y he aquí que un varón de Dios por palabra del SEÑOR vino de Judá a Bet-el; y estando Jeroboam al altar para quemar incienso,

2 él clamó contra el altar por palabra del SEÑOR, y dijo: Altar, altar, así dijo el SEÑOR: He aquí que a la casa de David nacerá un hijo, llamado Josías, el cual sacrificará sobre ti a los sacerdotes de los altos que queman sobre ti incienso; y sobre ti quemarán huesos de hombres.

3 Y aquel mismo día dio una señal, diciendo: Esta es la señal de que el SEÑOR ha hablado: he aquí que el altar se quebrará, y la ceniza que sobre él está se derramará.

4 Y cuando el rey oyó la palabra del varón de Dios, que había clamado contra el altar en Bet-el, extendiendo su mano desde el altar, Jeroboam dijo: ¡Prendedle! Mas la mano que había extendido contra él, se le secó, que no la pudo tornar a sí.

5 Y el altar se rompió, y se derramó la ceniza del altar, conforme a la señal que el varón de Dios había dado por palabra del SEÑOR.

6 Entonces respondiendo el rey, dijo al varón de Dios: Te pido que ruegues a la faz del SEÑOR tu Dios, y ora por mí, que mi mano me sea restituida. Y el varón de Dios oró a la faz del SEÑOR, y la mano del rey se le recuperó y se tornó como antes.

7 Y el rey dijo al varón de Dios: Ven conmigo a casa, y comerás, y yo te daré un don.

8 Mas el varón de Dios dijo al rey: Si me dieses la mitad de tu casa, no iría contigo, ni comería pan ni bebería agua en este lugar;

9 porque así me está mandado por palabra del SEÑOR, diciendo: No comas pan, ni bebas agua, ni vuelvas por el camino que fueres.

10 Se fue pues por otro camino, y no volvió por el camino por donde había venido a Bet-el.

11 Y moraba en Bet-el un viejo profeta, al cual vino su hijo, y le contó todo lo que el varón de Dios había hecho aquel día en Bet-el; y contaron también a su padre las palabras que había hablado al rey.

12 Y su padre les dijo: ¿Por qué camino fue? Y sus hijos le mostraron el camino por donde se había tornado el varón de Dios, que había venido de Judá.

13 Y él dijo a sus hijos: Ensilladme el asno. Y ellos le ensillaron el asno, y subió en él.

14 Y yendo tras el varón de Dios, le halló que estaba sentado debajo de un alcornoque; y le dijo: ¿Eres tú el varón de Dios que viniste de Judá? Y él dijo: Yo soy .

15 Le dijo entonces : Ven conmigo a casa, y come del pan.

16 Mas él respondió: No podré volver contigo, ni iré contigo; ni tampoco comeré pan ni beberé agua contigo en este lugar;

17 porque por palabra de Dios me ha sido dicho: No comas pan ni bebas agua allí, ni vuelvas por el camino que fueres.

18 Y el otro le dijo: Yo también soy profeta como tú, y un ángel me ha hablado por palabra del SEÑOR, diciendo: Vuélvele contigo a tu casa, para que coma pan y beba agua. Pero le mintió.

19 Entonces volvió con él, y comió del pan en su casa, y bebió del agua.

20 Y aconteció que, estando ellos a la mesa, vino palabra del SEÑOR al profeta que le había hecho volver;

21 y clamó al varón de Dios que había venido de Judá, diciendo: Así dijo el SEÑOR: Por cuanto has sido rebelde al dicho del SEÑOR, y no guardaste el mandamiento que el SEÑOR tu Dios te había mandado,

22 sino que volviste, y comiste del pan y bebiste del agua en el lugar donde el SEÑOR te había dicho, que ni comieses pan, ni bebieses agua, no entrará tu cuerpo en el sepulcro de tus padres.

23 Y cuando había comido del pan, y bebido, el profeta que le había hecho volver le ensilló un asno;

24 y yéndose, le topó un león en el camino, y le mató; y su cuerpo estaba echado en el camino, y el asno estaba junto a él, y el león también estaba junto al cuerpo.

25 Y he aquí unos que pasaban, y vieron el cuerpo que estaba echado en el camino, y el león que estaba junto al cuerpo; y vinieron, y lo dijeron en la ciudad donde el viejo profeta habitaba.

26 Y oyéndolo el profeta que le había vuelto del camino, dijo: El varón de Dios es, que fue rebelde al dicho del SEÑOR; por tanto el SEÑOR le ha entregado al león, que le ha quebrantado y muerto, conforme a la palabra del SEÑOR que él le dijo.

27 Y habló a sus hijos, y les dijo: Ensilladme un asno. Y ellos se lo ensillaron.

28 Y él fue, y halló su cuerpo tendido en el camino, y el asno y el león estaban junto al cuerpo; el león no había comido el cuerpo, ni dañado al asno.

29 Y tomando el profeta el cuerpo del varón de Dios, lo puso sobre el asno, y se lo llevó. Y el profeta viejo vino a la ciudad, para endecharle y enterrarle.

30 Y puso su cuerpo en su sepulcro; y le endecharon, diciendo : ¡Ay, hermano mío!

31 Y después que le hubieron enterrado, habló a sus hijos, diciendo: Cuando yo muriere, enterradme en el sepulcro en que está sepultado el varón de Dios; poned mis huesos junto a los suyos.

32 Porque sin duda vendrá lo que él dijo a voces por palabra del SEÑOR contra el altar que está en Bet-el, y contra todas las casas de los altos que están en las ciudades de Samaria.

33 Después de esto no se tornó Jeroboam de su mal camino; antes volvió a hacer sacerdotes de los altos de entre el pueblo, y quien quería se consagraba, y era de los sacerdotes de los altos.

34 Y esto fue causa de pecado a la casa de Jeroboam; por lo cual fue cortada y raída de sobre la faz de la tierra.

Chapter 13

Jeroboam's sin reproved. (1-10) The prophet deceived. (11-22) The disobedient prophet is slain, Jeroboam's obstinacy. (23-34)

Verses 1-10 In threatening the altar, the prophet threatens the founder and worshippers. Idolatrous worship will not continue, but the word of the Lord will endure for ever. The prediction plainly declared that the family of David would continue, and support true religion, when the ten tribes would not be able to resist them. If God, in justice, harden the hearts of sinners, so that the hand they have stretched out in sin they cannot pull in again by repentance, that is a spiritual judgment, represented by this, and much more dreadful. Jeroboam looked for help, not from his calves, but from God only, from his power, and his favour. The time may come when those that hate the preaching, would be glad of the prayers of faithful ministers. Jeroboam does not desire the prophet to pray that his sin might be pardoned, and his heart changed, but only that his hand might be restored. He seemed affected for the present with both the judgment and the mercy, but the impression wore off. God forbade his messenger to eat or drink in Bethel, to show his detestation of their idolatry and apostacy from God, and to teach us not to have fellowship with the works of darkness. Those have not learned self-denial, who cannot forbear one forbidden meal.

Verses 11-22 The old prophet's conduct proves that he was not really a godly man. When the change took place under Jeroboam, he preferred his ease and interest to his religion. He took a very bad method to bring the good prophet back. It was all a lie. Believers are most in danger of being drawn from their duty by plausible pretences of holiness. We may wonder that the wicked prophet went unpunished, while the holy man of God was suddenly and severely punished. What shall we make of this? The judgments of God are beyond our power to fathom; and there is a judgment to come. Nothing can excuse any act of wilful disobedience. This shows what they must expect who hearken to the great deceiver. They that yield to him as a tempter, will be terrified by him as a tormentor. Those whom he now fawns upon, he will afterwards fly upon; and whom he draws into sin, he will try to drive to despair.

Verses 23-34 God is displeased at the sins of his own people; and no man shall be protected in disobedience, by his office, his nearness to God, or any services he has done for him. God warns all whom he employs, strictly to observe their orders. We cannot judge of men by their sufferings, nor of sins by present punishments; with some, the flesh is destroyed, that the spirit may be saved; with others, the flesh is pampered, that the soul may ripen for hell. Jeroboam returned not from his evil way. He promised himself that the calves would secure the crown to his family, but they lost it, and sunk his family. Those betray themselves who think to support themselves by any sin whatever. Let us dread prospering in sinful ways; pray to be kept from every delusion and temptation, and to be enabled to walk with self-denying perseverance in the way of God's commands.

INTRODUCTION TO 1 KINGS 13

In this chapter is an account of a man of God being sent to exclaim against Jeroboam's altar, and threaten its destruction, of which he gave a sign, which was accomplished, and with it the withering of the king's hand, which was healed upon the prophet's prayer for him, 1Ki 13:1-7, who would have entertained him at his house, but he refused the offer, and departed, 1Ki 13:8-10, but an old prophet in Bethel hearing of him, rode after him, and fetched him back to eat bread with him, through a lie he told him, 1Ki 13:11-19 upon which the word came to the old prophet, threatening the man of God with death for disobeying his command, and which was accordingly executed by a lion that met him in the way, and slew him, 1Ki 13:20-24, of which the old prophet being informed, went and took up his carcass, and buried it in his own sepulchre, where he charged his sons to bury him also when dead, believing that all the man of God had said would be fulfilled, 1Ki 13:25-30 and the chapter is closed with observing the continuance of Jeroboam in his idolatry, 1Ki 13:33,34.
