1 Samuel 17

1 Y los filisteos juntaron sus ejércitos para la guerra, y se congregaron en Soco, que es de Judá, y asentaron el campamento entre Soco y Azeca, en Efes-damim.

2 Y también Saúl y los varones de Israel se juntaron, y asentaron el campamento en el valle del Alcornoque (de Ela ), y ordenaron la batalla contra los filisteos.

3 Y los filisteos estaban sobre un monte a un lado, e Israel estaba sobre otro monte al otro lado, y el valle entre ellos.

4 Salió entonces un varón del campamento de los filisteos que se puso entre los dos campamentos , el cual se llamaba Goliat, de Gat, y tenía de altura seis codos y un palmo.

5 Y traía un almete de acero en su cabeza, e iba vestido con corazas de planchas; y era el peso de las corazas cinco mil siclos de bronce.

6 Y sobre sus piernas traía grebas de hierro, y un escudo de acero a sus hombros.

7 El asta de su lanza era como un rodillo de telar, y tenía el hierro de su lanza seiscientos siclos de hierro; e iba su escudero delante de él.

8 Y se paró, y dio voces a los escuadrones de Israel, diciéndoles: ¿Para qué salís a dar batalla? ¿No soy yo el filisteo, y vosotros los siervos de Saúl? Escoged de entre vosotros un varón que venga contra mí.

9 Si él pudiere pelear conmigo, y me venciere, nosotros seremos vuestros siervos; y si yo pudiere más que él, y lo venciere, vosotros seréis nuestros siervos y nos serviréis.

10 Y añadió el filisteo: Hoy yo he deshonrado el campamento de Israel; dadme un varón que pelee conmigo.

11 Y oyendo Saúl y todo Israel estas palabras del filisteo, se conturbaron, y tuvieron gran miedo.

12 Y David era hijo de un varón efrateo de Belén de Judá, cuyo nombre era Isaí, el cual tenía ocho hijos; y era este hombre en el tiempo de Saúl, viejo, y de gran edad entre los hombres.

13 Y los tres hijos mayores de Isaí habían ido a seguir a Saúl en la guerra. Y los nombres de sus tres hijos que habían ido a la guerra, eran: Eliab el primogénito, el segundo Abinadab, y el tercero Sama.

14 Y David era el menor. Y habiendo ido los tres mayores tras Saúl,

15 David había ido y vuelto de estar con Saúl, para apacentar las ovejas de su padre en Belén.

16 Venía, pues, aquel filisteo por la mañana y por la tarde, y se presentó por cuarenta días.

17 Y dijo Isaí a David su hijo: Toma ahora para tus hermanos un efa de esta cebada tostada, y estos diez panes, y llévalo presto al campamento a tus hermanos.

18 Llevarás asimismo estos diez quesos de leche al capitán de los mil, y cuida de ver si tus hermanos están buenos, y toma prendas de ellos.

19 Y Saúl y ellos y todos los de Israel, estaban en el valle del Alcornoque, peleando contra los filisteos.

20 Se levantó, pues, David de mañana, y dejando las ovejas al cuidado de un guarda, se fue con su carga, como Isaí le había mandado; y llegó al atrincheramiento del ejército, el cual había salido en ordenanza, y ya tocaban al arma en batalla.

21 Porque así los israelitas como los filisteos estaban en ordenanza, escuadrón contra escuadrón.

22 Y David dejó de sobre sí la carga en mano del que guardaba el bagaje, y corrió al escuadrón; y cuando llegó, preguntaba por sus hermanos, si estaban buenos.

23 Y estando él hablando con ellos, he aquí aquel varón que se ponía en medio de los dos campamentos , que se llamaba Goliat, el filisteo de Gat, que subía de los escuadrones de los filisteos, hablando las mismas palabras; las cuales oyó David.

24 Y todos los varones de Israel que veían aquel hombre, huían delante de él, y tenían gran temor.

25 Y cada uno de los de Israel decía: ¿No habéis visto a aquel varón que sube? El sube para deshonrar a Israel. Al que le venciere, el rey le enriquecerá con grandes riquezas, y le dará su hija, y hará franca la casa de su padre en Israel.

26 Entonces habló David a los que junto a él estaban, diciendo: ¿Qué harán a aquel varón que venciere a este filisteo, y quitare la deshonra de Israel? Porque ¿quién es este filisteo incircunciso, para que deshonre a los escuadrones del Dios viviente?

27 Y el pueblo le respondió las mismas palabras, diciendo: Así se hará al tal varón que lo venciere.

28 Y oyéndole hablar Eliab su hermano mayor con aquellos varones, Eliab se encendió en ira contra David, y dijo: ¿Para qué has descendido acá? ¿Y a quién has dejado aquellas pocas ovejas en el desierto? Yo conozco tu soberbia y la malicia de tu corazón, que para ver la batalla has venido.

29 Y David respondió: ¿Qué he hecho yo ahora? Estas, ¿no son palabras?

30 Y apartándose de él hacia otros, habló lo mismo; y le respondieron los del pueblo como primero.

31 Y fueron oídas las palabras que David había dicho, las cuales fueron repetidas delante de Saúl, y él lo hizo venir.

32 Y dijo David a Saúl: No desmaye ninguno a causa de él; tu siervo irá y peleará con este filisteo.

33 Y dijo Saúl a David: No podrás tú ir contra aquel filisteo, para pelear con él; porque tú eres niño, y él es un hombre de guerra desde su juventud.

34 Y David respondió a Saúl: Tu siervo era pastor en las ovejas de su padre, y venía un león, o un oso, y tomaba algún cordero de la manada,

35 y salía yo tras él, y lo hería, y le libraba de su boca; y si se levantaba contra mí, yo le echaba mano de la quijada, y lo hería y mataba.

36 Fuese león, fuese oso, tu siervo lo mataba; pues este filisteo incircunciso será como uno de ellos, porque ha deshonrado al ejército del Dios viviente.

37 Y añadió David: el SEÑOR que me ha librado de las garras del león y de las garras del oso, él también me librará de la mano de este filisteo. Y dijo Saúl a David: Ve, y el SEÑOR sea contigo.

38 Y Saúl vistió a David de sus ropas, y puso sobre su cabeza un almete de acero, y le armó de coraza.

39 Y ciñó David la espada de Saúl sobre los vestidos de Saúl , y probó a andar, porque nunca lo había experimentado. Y dijo David a Saúl: Yo no puedo andar con esto, porque nunca lo experimenté. Y echando de sí David aquellas cosas,

40 tomó su cayado en su mano, y se tomó cinco piedras lisas del arroyo, y las puso en el saco pastoril, en el zurrón que traía, y con su honda en su mano se fue hacia el filisteo.

41 Y el filisteo venía andando y acercándose a David, y su escudero delante de él.

42 Y cuando el filisteo miró y vio a David le tuvo en poco; porque era joven, y rojo (de buen color ), y de hermoso parecer.

43 Y dijo el filisteo a David: ¿Soy yo perro para que vengas a mí con palos? Y maldijo a David por sus dioses.

44 Dijo luego el filisteo a David: Ven a mí, y daré tu carne a las aves del cielo, y a las bestias de la tierra.

45 Entonces dijo David al filisteo: Tú vienes a mí con cuchillo y lanza y escudo; mas yo vengo a ti en el nombre del SEÑOR de los ejércitos, el Dios de los escuadrones de Israel, que tú has deshonrado.

46 El SEÑOR te entregará hoy en mi mano, y yo te venceré, y quitaré tu cabeza de ti; y daré hoy los cuerpos de los filisteos a las aves del cielo y a las bestias de la tierra; y sabrá toda la tierra que hay Dios en Israel.

47 Y sabrá toda esta congregación que el SEÑOR no salva con espada y lanza; porque del SEÑOR es la guerra, y él os entregará en nuestras manos.

48 Y aconteció que, cuando el filisteo se levantó para ir y llegarse contra David, David se dio prisa, y corrió al combate contra el filisteo.

49 Y metiendo David su mano en el saco, tomó de allí una piedra, y se la tiró con la honda, e hirió al filisteo en la frente; y la piedra quedó hincada en su frente, y cayó en tierra sobre su rostro.

50 Así venció David al filisteo con honda y piedra; e hirió al filisteo y lo mató, sin tener David cuchillo en su mano.

51 Entonces corrió David y se puso sobre el filisteo, y tomando el cuchillo de él, sacándola de su vaina, lo mató, y le cortó con él la cabeza. Y cuando los filisteos vieron su gigante muerto, huyeron.

52 Y levantándose los de Israel y de Judá, dieron grita, y siguieron a los filisteos hasta llegar al valle, y hasta las puertas de Ecrón. Y cayeron heridos de los filisteos por el camino de Saaraim, hasta Gat y Ecrón.

53 Y volviendo los hijos de Israel de seguir a los filisteos, despojaron su campamento.

54 Y David tomó la cabeza del filisteo, y la trajo a Jerusalén, mas puso sus armas en su tienda.

55 Mas cuando Saúl vio a David que salía a encontrarse con el filisteo, dijo a Abner general del ejército: Abner, ¿de quién es hijo aquel joven? Y Abner respondió:

56 Vive tu alma, oh rey, que no lo sé. Y el rey dijo: Pregunta pues de quién es hijo aquel joven.

57 Y cuando David volvía de matar al filisteo, Abner lo tomó, y lo llevó delante de Saúl, teniendo la cabeza del filisteo en su mano.

58 Y le dijo Saúl: Joven, ¿de quién eres hijo? Y David respondió: Yo soy hijo de tu siervo Isaí de Belén.

Chapter 17

Goliath's challenge. (1-11) David comes to the camp. (12-30) David undertakes to fight Goliath. (31-39) and goes to meet him. (40-47) He kills Goliath. (48-58)

Verses 1-11 Men so entirely depend upon God in all things, that when he withdraws his help, the most valiant and resolute cannot find their hearts or hands, as daily experience shows.

Verses 12-30 Jesse little thought of sending his son to the army at that critical juncture; but the wise God orders actions and affairs, so as to serve his designs. In times of general formality and lukewarmness, every degree of zeal which implies readiness to go further, or to venture more in the cause of God than others, will be blamed as pride and ambition, and by none more than by near relations, like Eliab, or negligent superiors. It was a trial of David's meekness, patience, and constancy. He had right and reason on his side, and did not render railing for railing; with a soft answer he turned away his brother's wrath. This conquest of his own passion was more honourable than that of Goliath. Those who undertake great and public services, must not think it strange if they are spoken ill of, and opposed by those from whom they expect support and assistance. They must humbly go on with their work, in the face not only of enemies' threats, but of friends' slights and suspicions.

Verses 31-39 A shepherd lad, come the same morning from keeping sheep, had more courage than all the mighty men of Israel. Thus God often sends good words to his Israel, and does great things for them, by the weak and foolish things of the world. As he had answered his brother's passion with meekness, so David answered Saul's fear with faith. When David kept sheep, he proved himself very careful and tender of his flock. This reminds us of Christ, the good Shepherd, who not only ventured, but laid down his life for the sheep. Our experience ought to encourage us to trust in God, and be bold in the way of duty. He that has delivered, does and will continue to do so. David gained leave to fight the Philistine. Not being used to such armour as Saul put upon him, he was not satisfied to go in that manner; this was from the Lord, that it might more plainly appear he fought and conquered in faith, and that the victory was from Him who works by the feeblest and most despised means and instruments. It is not to be inquired how excellent any thing is, but how proper. Let Saul's coat be ever so rich, and his armour ever so strong, what is David the better if they fit him not? But faith, prayer, truth, and righteousness; the whole armour of God, and the mind that was in Christ; are equally needful for all the servants of the Lord, whatever may be their work.

Verses 40-47 The security and presumption of fools destroy them. Nothing can excel the humility, faith, and piety which appear in David's words. He expressed his assured expectation of success; he gloried in his mean appearance and arms, that the victory might be ascribed to the Lord alone.

Verses 48-58 See how frail and uncertain life is, even when a man thinks himself best fortified; how quickly, how easily, and by how small a matter, the passage may be opened for life to go out, and death to enter! Let not the strong man glory in his strength, nor the armed man in his armour. God resists the proud, and pours contempt on those who defy him and his people. No one ever hardened his heart against God and prospered. The history is recorded, that all may exert themselves for the honour of God, and the support of his cause, with bold and unshaken reliance on him. There is one conflict in which all the followers of the Lamb are, and must be engaged; one enemy, more formidable than Goliath, still challenges the armies of Israel. But "resist the devil, and he will flee from you." Go forth to battle with the faith of David, and the powers of darkness shall not stand against you. But how often is the Christian foiled through an evil heart of unbelief!

INTRODUCTION TO FIRST SAMUEL 17

This chapter relates how the armies of Israel, and of the Philistines, prepared for battle, and where, 1Sa 17:1-3, describes a champion of the Philistines, who defied the armies of Israel, 1Sa 17:4-11, and while he was so doing, it informs us that David came into the camp, and he heard his words, and signified to one and another his inclination to fight with him, 1Sa 17:12-30, which being reported to Saul, David was sent for by him, and much discourse passed between them about it, 1Sa 17:31-37 when we are told the manner in which he engaged with the Philistine, and the victory he obtained over him, 1Sa 17:38-51 upon which the Philistines fled, and Israel pursued them; and on account of this action David was taken notice of by Saul, and brought to court again, as the following chapter shows, 1Sa 17:52-58.
