2 Reyes 13

1 En el año veintitrés de Joás hijo de Ocozías, rey de Judá, comenzó a reinar Joacaz hijo de Jehú sobre Israel en Samaria; y reinó diecisiete años.

2 E hizo lo malo en ojos del SEÑOR, y siguió los pecados de Jeroboam hijo de Nabat, el que hizo pecar a Israel; y no se apartó de ellos.

3 Y se encendió el furor del SEÑOR contra Israel, y los entregó en mano de Hazael rey de Siria, y en mano de Ben-adad hijo de Hazael, perpetuamente.

4 Mas Joacaz oró a la faz del SEÑOR, y el SEÑOR lo oyó; porque miró la aflicción de Israel, pues el rey de Siria los afligía.

5 (Y dio el SEÑOR salvador a Israel, y salieron de bajo la mano de los siros; y habitaron los hijos de Israel en sus estancias, como antes.

6 Con todo eso no se apartaron de los pecados de la casa de Jeroboam, el que hizo pecar a Israel; en ellos anduvieron; y también el bosque permaneció en Samaria).

7 Porque no le había quedado pueblo a Joacaz, sino cincuenta hombres de a caballo, y diez carros, y diez mil hombres de a pie; pues el rey de Siria los había destruido, y los había puesto como polvo para hollar.

8 Lo demás de los hechos de Joacaz, y todo lo que hizo, y sus valentías, ¿no está todo escrito en el libro de las crónicas de los reyes de Israel?

9 Y durmió Joacaz con sus padres, y lo sepultaron en Samaria; y reinó en su lugar Joás su hijo.

10 El año treinta y siete de Joás rey de Judá, comenzó a reinar Joás hijo de Joacaz sobre Israel en Samaria; y reinó dieciséis años.

11 E hizo lo malo en ojos del SEÑOR: no se apartó de todos los pecados de Jeroboam hijo de Nabat, el que hizo pecar a Israel; en ellos anduvo.

12 Lo demás de los hechos de Joás, y todas las cosas que hizo, y sus valentías con que guerreó contra Amasías rey de Judá, ¿no está todo escrito en el libro de las crónicas de los reyes de Israel?

13 Y durmió Joás con sus padres, y se sentó Jeroboam sobre su trono; y Joás fue sepultado en Samaria con los reyes de Israel.

14 Estaba Eliseo enfermo de aquella su enfermedad de que murió. Y descendió a él Joás rey de Israel, y llorando delante de él, dijo: ¡Padre mío, padre mío, carros de Israel y su gente de a caballo!

15 Y le dijo Eliseo: Toma el arco y las saetas. Tomó él entonces el arco y las saetas.

16 Y dijo Eliseo al rey de Israel: Pon tu mano sobre el arco como para tirar . Y puso él su mano sobre el arco. Entonces puso Eliseo sus manos sobre las manos del rey,

17 y dijo: Abre la ventana de hacia el oriente. Y cuando él la abrió dijo Eliseo: Tira. Y tirando él, dijo Eliseo : Saeta de salud del SEÑOR, y saeta de salud contra Siria; porque herirás a los siros en Afec, hasta consumirlos.

18 Y le volvió a decir: Toma las saetas. Y luego que el rey de Israel las hubo tomado, le dijo: Hiere la tierra. Y él hirió tres veces, y cesó.

19 Entonces el varón de Dios, enojado con él, le dijo: A herir cinco o seis veces, herirías a Siria, hasta no quedar ninguno; pero ahora tres veces herirás a Siria.

20 Y murió Eliseo, y lo sepultaron. Entrado el año vinieron ejércitos de moabitas a la tierra.

21 Y aconteció que queriendo unos sepultar un hombre, súbitamente vieron al ejército, y arrojaron al hombre en el sepulcro de Eliseo; y el muerto tocó los huesos de Eliseo, y revivió, y se levantó sobre sus pies.

22 Así que Hazael, rey de Siria, afligió a Israel todo el tiempo de Joacaz.

23 Mas el SEÑOR tuvo misericordia de ellos, y se compadeció de ellos, y los miró, por amor de su pacto con Abraham, Isaac y Jacob; y no quiso destruirlos ni echarlos de delante de sí hasta ahora.

24 Y murió Hazael rey de Siria, y reinó en su lugar Ben-adad su hijo.

25 Y volvió Joás hijo de Joacaz, y tomó de mano de Ben-adad hijo de Hazael, las ciudades que él había tomado de mano de Joacaz su padre en guerra; porque tres veces lo hirió Joás, y restituyó las ciudades a Israel.

Chapter 13

Reign of Jehoahaz. (1-9) Jehoash, king of Israel, Elisha dying. (10-19) Elisha's death, The victories of Jehoash. (20-25)

Verses 1-9 It was the ancient honour of Israel that they were a praying people. Jehoahaz, their king, in his distress, besought the Lord; applied himself for help, but not to the calves; what help could they give him? He sought the Lord. See how swift God is to show mercy; how ready to hear prayer; how willing to find a reason to be gracious; else he would not look so far back as the ancient covenant Israel had so often broken, and forfeited. Let this invite and engage us for ever to him; and encourage even those who have forsaken him, to return and repent; for there is forgiveness with him, that he may be feared. And if the Lord answer the mere cry of distress for temporal relief, much more will he regard the prayer of faith for spiritual blessings.

Verses 10-19 Jehoash, the king, came to Elisha, to receive his dying counsel and blessing. It may turn much to our spiritual advantage, to attend the sick-beds and death-beds of good men, that we may be encouraged in religion by the living comforts they have from it in a dying hour. Elisha assured the king of his success; yet he must look up to God for direction and strength; must reckon his own hands not enough, but go on, in dependence upon Divine aid. The trembling hands of the dying prophet, as they signified the power of God, gave this arrow more force than the hands of the king in his full strength. By contemning the sign, the king lost the thing signified, to the grief of the dying prophet. It is a trouble to good men, to see those to whom they wish well, forsake their own mercies, and to see them lose advantages against spiritual enemies.

Verses 20-25 God has many ways to chastise a provoking people. Trouble comes sometimes from that point whence we least feared it. The mention of this invasion on the death of Elisha, shows that the removal of God's faithful prophets is a presage of coming judgments. His dead body was a means of giving life to another dead body. This miracle was a confirmation of his prophecies. And it may have reference to Christ, by whose death and burial, the grave is made a safe and happy passage to life to all believers. Jehoash was successful against the Syrians, just as often as he had struck the ground with the arrows, then a stop was put to his victories. Many have repented, when too late, of distrusts and the straitness of their desires.

This chapter gives an account of the wicked reign of Jehoahaz son of Jehu king of Israel, and of the low estate he was brought into by the Syrians, 2Ki 13:1-9, and of the reign of his son Joash, 2Ki 13:10-13, and of the sickness and death of Elisha; of the visit Joash made him in his sickness; and of his prediction of the king's success against the Syrians; and of the reviving of a dead man cast into the prophet's sepulchre, 2Ki 13:14-21 and of the success of Joash against the Syrians, according to the prediction of the prophet, 2Ki 13:22-25.

\\Jehoahaz the son of Jehu began to reign over Israel in Samaria\\; whereas Joash began to reign in the seventh year of Jehu, and Jehu reigned but twenty eight years, 2Ki 10:36, and 2Ki 12:1, this could be but the twenty first of Joash; to reconcile which it must be observed, that it was at the beginning of the seventh year of Jehu that Joash began to reign, and at the beginning of the twenty third of Joash that Jehoahaz began to reign, as the Jewish commentators observe:
