2 Reyes 8

1 Y habló Eliseo a aquella mujer a cuyo hijo había hecho vivir, diciendo: Levántate, vete tú y toda tu casa a vivir donde pudieres; porque el SEÑOR ha llamado el hambre, la cual vendrá también sobre la tierra siete años.

2 Entonces la mujer se levantó, e hizo como el varón de Dios le dijo; y se partió ella con su familia, y vivió en tierra de los filisteos siete años.

3 Y cuando fueron pasados los siete años, la mujer volvió de la tierra de los filisteos; después salió para clamar al rey por su casa, y por sus tierras.

4 Y había el rey hablado con Giezi, criado del varón de Dios, diciéndole: Te ruego que me cuentes todas las maravillas que ha hecho Eliseo.

5 Y contando él al rey cómo había hecho vivir a un muerto, he aquí la mujer, a cuyo hijo había hecho vivir, que clamaba al rey por su casa y por sus tierras. Entonces dijo Giezi: Rey señor mío, esta es la mujer, y este es su hijo, al cual Eliseo hizo vivir.

6 Y preguntando el rey a la mujer, ella se lo contó. Entonces el rey le dio un eunuco, diciéndole: Hazle volver todas las cosas que eran suyas, y todos los frutos de la tierras desde el día que dejó las tierras hasta ahora.

7 Eliseo se fue luego a Damasco, y Ben-adad rey de Siria estaba enfermo, al cual dieron aviso, diciendo: El varón de Dios es venido aquí.

8 Y el rey dijo a Hazael: Toma en tu mano un presente, y ve a recibir al varón de Dios, y consulta por él al SEÑOR, diciendo: ¿Tengo de sanar de esta enfermedad?

9 Tomó, pues, Hazael en su mano un presente de todos los bienes de Damasco, cuarenta camellos cargados, y le salió a recibir; y llegó, y se puso delante de él, y dijo: Tu hijo Ben-adad, rey de Siria, me ha enviado a ti, diciendo: ¿Tengo de sanar de esta enfermedad?

10 Y Eliseo le dijo: Ve, dile: Podrás ciertamente sanarse. Pero el SEÑOR me ha mostrado que él ha de morir ciertamente.

11 Y el varón de Dios le miró fijamente, y se estuvo así hasta avergonzarse; y lloró el varón de Dios.

12 Entonces le dijo Hazael: ¿Por qué llora mi señor? Y él respondió: Porque sé el mal que has de hacer a los hijos de Israel; a sus fortalezas pegarás fuego, y a sus jóvenes matarás a cuchillo, y estrellarás a sus niños, y abrirás a sus preñadas.

13 Y Hazael dijo: ¿Por qué? ¿Es tu siervo perro, que hará esta gran cosa? Y respondió Eliseo: El SEÑOR me ha mostrado que tú has de ser rey de Siria.

14 Y él se partió de Eliseo, y vino a su señor, el cual le dijo: ¿Qué te dijo Eliseo? Y él respondió: Me dijo que podrás ciertamente sanarse.

15 El día siguiente tomó un paño basto, y lo metió en agua, y lo tendió sobre el rostro de Ben-adad , y murió; y reinó Hazael en su lugar.

16 En el quinto año de Joram hijo de Acab rey de Israel, y siendo Josafat rey de Judá, comenzó a reinar Joram hijo de Josafat rey de Judá.

17 De treinta y dos años era cuando comenzó a reinar, y ocho años reinó en Jerusalén.

18 Anduvo en el camino de los reyes de Israel, como hizo la casa de Acab; porque una hija de Acab fue su mujer; e hizo lo malo en ojos del SEÑOR.

19 Con todo eso, el SEÑOR no quiso cortar a Judá, por amor de David su siervo, como le había prometido darle lámpara de sus hijos perpetuamente.

20 En su tiempo se rebeló Edom de debajo de la mano de Judá, y pusieron rey sobre sí.

21 Joram por tanto pasó a Seir, y todos sus carros con él; y levantándose de noche hirió a los idumeos, los cuales le habían cercado, y a los capitanes de los carros; y el pueblo huyó a sus estancias.

22 Sin embargo Edom se rebeló de bajo la mano de Judá, hasta hoy. Se rebeló además Libna en el mismo tiempo.

23 Lo demás de los hechos de Joram, y todas las cosas que hizo, ¿no está todo escrito en el libro de las crónicas de los reyes de Judá?

24 Y durmió Joram con sus padres, y fue sepultado con sus padres en la ciudad de David; y reinó en lugar suyo Ocozías, su hijo.

25 En el año doce de Joram hijo de Acab rey de Israel, comenzó a reinar Ocozías hijo de Joram rey de Judá.

26 De veintidós años era Ocozías cuando comenzó a reinar, y reinó un año en Jerusalén. El nombre de su madre fue Atalía hija de Omri rey de Israel.

27 Anduvo en el camino de la casa de Acab, e hizo lo malo en ojos del SEÑOR, como la casa de Acab; porque era yerno de la casa de Acab.

28 Y fue a la guerra con Joram hijo de Acab a Ramot de Galaad, contra Hazael rey de Siria; y los Siros hirieron a Joram.

29 Y el rey Joram se volvió a Jezreel, para curarse de las heridas que los Siros le hicieron delante de Ramot, cuando peleó contra Hazael rey de Siria. Y descendió Ocozías hijo de Joram rey de Judá, a visitar a Joram hijo de Acab en Jezreel, porque estaba enfermo.

Chapter 8

A famine in Israel, The Shunammite obtains her land. (1-6) Elisha consulted by Hazael, Death of Benhadad. (7-15) Jehoram's wicked reign in Judah. (16-24) Ahaziah's wicked reign in Judah. (25-29)

Verses 1-6 The kindness of the good Shunammite to Elisha, was rewarded by the care taken of her in famine. It is well to foresee an evil, and wisdom, when we foresee it, to hide ourselves if we lawfully may do so. When the famine was over, she returned out of the land of the Philistines; that was no proper place for an Israelite, any longer than there was necessity for it. Time was when she dwelt so securely among her own people, that she had no occasion to be spoken for to the king; but there is much uncertainty in this life, so that things or persons may fail us which we most depend upon, and those befriend us which we think we shall never need. Sometimes events, small in themselves, prove of consequence, as here; for they made the king ready to believe Gehazi's narrative, when thus confirmed. It made him ready to grant her request, and to support a life which was given once and again by miracle.

Verses 7-15 Among other changes of men's minds by affliction, it often gives other thoughts of God's ministers, and teaches to value the counsels and prayers of those whom they have hated and despised. It was not in Hazael's countenance that Elisha read what he would do, but God revealed it to him, and it fetched tears from his eyes: the more foresight men have, the more grief they are liable to. It is possible for a man, under the convictions and restraints of natural conscience, to express great abhorrence of a sin, yet afterwards to be reconciled to it. Those that are little and low in the world, cannot imagine how strong the temptations of power and prosperity are, which, if ever they arrive at, they will find how deceitful their hearts are, how much worse than they suspected. The devil ruins men, by saying they shall certainly recover and do well, so rocking them asleep in security. Hazael's false account was an injury to the king, who lost the benefit of the prophet's warning to prepare for death, and an injury to Elisha, who would be counted a false prophet. It is not certain that Hazael murdered his master, or if he caused his death it may have been without any design. But he was a dissembler, and afterwards proved a persecutor to Israel.

Verses 16-24 A general idea is given of Jehoram's badness. His father, no doubt, had him taught the true knowledge of the Lord, but did ill to marry him to the daughter of Ahab; no good could come of union with an idolatrous family.

Verses 25-29 Names do not make natures, but it was bad for Jehoshaphat's family to borrow names from Ahab's. Ahaziah's relation to Ahab's family was the occasion of his wickedness and of his fall. When men choose wives for themselves, let them remember they are choosing mothers for their children. Providence so ordered it, that Ahaziah might be cut off with the house of Ahab, when the measure of their iniquity was full. Those who partake with sinners in their sin, must expect to partake with them in their plagues. May all the changes, troubles, and wickedness of the world, make us more earnest to obtain an interest in the salvation of Christ.

This chapter gives an account of some advice Elisha had formerly given to the Shunammite woman, and of the success of it, 2Ki 8:1-6 and of the sickness of the king of Syria, who sent to Elisha, then being at Damascus, by Hazael, to know whether he should recover; by whom a message was returned, and Hazael was told by the prophet he should be king of Syria, and exercise great cruelty in Israel, 2Ki 8:7-15 and of the bad reign of Jehoram, son of Jehoshaphat, over Judah, 2Ki 8:16-24 and of the reign of his son Ahaziah, 2Ki 8:25-29.
