Habakkuk 3:3-15

Listen to Habakkuk 3:3-15
3 God comes from 1Teman, And the Holy One from Mount 2Paran. Selah. His 3splendor covers the heavens, And the 4earth is full of His praise.
4 His 5radiance is like the sunlight; He has rays flashing from His hand, And there is the hiding of His 6power.
5 Before Him goes 7pestilence, And 8plague comes after Him.
6 He stood and surveyed the earth; He looked and 9startled the nations. Yes, the perpetual mountains were shattered, The ancient hills collapsed. His ways are 10everlasting.
7 I saw the tents of Cushan under 11distress, The tent curtains of the land of 12Midian were trembling.
8 Did the LORD rage against the 13rivers, Or was Your anger against the rivers, Or was Your wrath against the 14sea, That You 15rode on Your horses, On Your 16chariots of salvation?
9 Your 17bow was made bare *, The rods of chastisement were sworn. Selah. You 18cleaved the earth with rivers.
10 The mountains saw You and quaked; The downpour of waters swept by. The deep 19uttered forth its voice, It lifted high its hands.
11 20Sun and moon stood in their places; They went away at the 21light of Your arrows, At the radiance of Your gleaming spear.
12 In indignation You 22marched through the earth; In anger You 23trampled the nations.
13 You went forth for the 24salvation of Your people, For the salvation of Your 25anointed. You struck the 26head of the house of the evil To lay him open from thigh to neck. Selah.
14 You pierced with his 27own spears The head of his throngs. They 28stormed in to scatter us; Their exultation was like those Who 29devour the oppressed in secret.
15 You 30trampled on the sea with Your horses, On the 31surge of many waters.

Habakkuk 3:3-15 Meaning and Commentary

INTRODUCTION TO HABAKKUK 3

The title of this chapter is a prayer of Habakkuk the prophet, composed after the manner of a psalm of David, and directed to the chief singer, Hab 3:1,19. The occasion of it is expressed, Hab 3:2 in which the prophet declares his concern for the work of the Lord, and the promotion of the kingdom and interest of Christ; and observes the various steps that were, or would be, taken for the advancement of it; for which he prays, and suggests that these would be after the manner of the Lord's dealing with the people of Israel, and settling them in the land of Canaan, Hab 3:3-15 and there being several things awful in this account, both with respect to the judgments of God on his enemies, and the conflicts and trials of his own people, it greatly affected the mind of the prophet, Hab 3:16 and yet, in the view of the worst, he expresses his strong faith in the Lord, as to better times and things, that would most assuredly come, Hab 3:17-19.
