Psalm 105:24-45

Listen to Psalm 105:24-45
And the Lord 1made his people very fruitful and made them stronger than their foes.
He 2turned their hearts to hate his people, to 3deal craftily with his servants.
He 4sent Moses, his servant, and Aaron, 5whom he had chosen.
6They performed his signs among them and miracles in 7the land of Ham.
He 8sent darkness, and made the land dark; they 9did not rebel[a] against his words.
He turned their waters into blood and 10caused their fish to die.
Their land swarmed with frogs, even in 11the chambers of their kings.
He spoke, and there came 12swarms of flies, 13and gnats throughout their country.
He gave them hail for rain, and fiery 14lightning bolts through their land.
He struck down their vines and fig trees, and 15shattered the trees of their country.
He spoke, and the 16locusts came, young locusts without number,
which devoured all the vegetation in their land and ate up the fruit of their ground.
He 17struck down all the firstborn in their land, 18the firstfruits of all their strength.
Then he brought out Israel with 19silver and gold, and there was none among his tribes who stumbled.
20Egypt was glad when they departed, for 21dread of them had fallen upon it.
He 22spread a cloud for a covering, and fire to give light by night.
23They asked, and he 24brought quail, and gave them 25bread from heaven in abundance.
He opened the rock, and 26water gushed out; it flowed through 27the desert like a river.
For he 28remembered his holy promise, and 29Abraham, his servant.
So he brought his people out with joy, his 30chosen ones with 31singing.
And he 32gave them the lands of the nations, and they took possession of the fruit of the peoples’ toil,
that they might 33keep his statutes and 34observe his laws. 35Praise the Lord!

Psalm 105:24-45 Meaning and Commentary

INTRODUCTION TO PSALM 105

This psalm was penned by David, and sung at the time when the ark was brought from the house of Obededom to the place which David had prepared for it; at least the first fifteen verses of it, the other part being probably added afterwards by the same inspired penman, as appears from 1Ch 16:1-7. The subject matter of the psalm is the special and distinguishing goodness of God to the children of Israel, and to his church and people, of which they were typical: the history of God's regard to and care of their principal ancestors, Abraham, Jacob, Joseph and of the whole body of the people, in bringing them out of Egypt, leading them through the wilderness, and settling them in the land of Canaan, is here recited, as an argument for praise and thankfulness.
