Psalm 78:9-39

Listen to Psalm 78:9-39
The sons of Ephraim were 1archers equipped with bows, Yet 2they turned back in the day of battle.
They 3did not keep the covenant of God And refused to 4walk in His law;
They 5forgot His deeds And His miracles that He had shown them.
6He wrought wonders before their fathers In the land of Egypt, in the 7field of Zoan.
He 8divided the sea and caused them to pass through, And He made the waters stand 9up like a heap.
Then He led them with the cloud by 10day And all the night with a 11light of fire.
He 12split the rocks in the wilderness And gave them abundant drink like the ocean depths.
He 13brought forth streams also from the rock And caused waters to run down like rivers.
Yet they still continued to sin against Him, To 14rebel against the Most High in the desert.
And in their heart they 15put God to the test By asking 16food according to their desire.
Then they spoke against God; They said, "17Can God prepare a table in the wilderness?
"Behold, He 18struck the rock so that waters gushed out, And streams were overflowing; Can He give bread also? Will He provide 19meat for His people?"
Therefore the LORD heard and was 20full of wrath; And a fire was kindled against Jacob And anger also mounted against Israel,
Because they 21did not believe in God And did not trust in His salvation.
Yet He commanded the clouds above * And 22opened the doors of heaven;
He 23rained down manna upon them to eat And gave them 24food from heaven.
Man did eat the bread of angels; He sent them food 25in abundance.
He 26caused the east wind to blow in the heavens And by His power He directed the south wind.
When He rained meat upon them like the dust, Even 27winged fowl like the sand of the seas,
Then He let them fall in the midst of their camp, Round about their dwellings.
So they 28ate and were well filled, And their desire He gave to them.
Before they had satisfied their desire, 29While their food was in their mouths,
The 30anger of God rose against them And killed some of their 31stoutest ones, And subdued the choice men of Israel.
In spite of all this they 32still sinned And 33did not believe in His wonderful works.
So He brought 34their days to an end in futility And their years in sudden terror.
When He killed them, then they 35sought Him, And returned and searched 36diligently for God;
And they remembered that God was their 37rock, And the Most High God their 38Redeemer.
But they 39deceived Him with their mouth And 40lied to Him with their tongue.
For their heart was not 41steadfast toward Him, Nor were they faithful in His covenant.
But He, being 42compassionate, 43forgave their iniquity and did not destroy them; And often He 44restrained His anger And did not arouse all His wrath.
Thus 45He remembered that they were but 46flesh, A 47wind that passes and does not return.

Psalm 78:9-39 Meaning and Commentary

Maschil of Asaph. Or for "Asaph" {f}; a doctrinal and "instructive" psalm, as the word "Maschil" signifies; see Psalm 32:1, which was delivered to Asaph to be sung; the Targum is, "the understanding of the Holy Spirit by the hands of Asaph." Some think David was the penman of it; but from the latter part of it, in which mention is made of him, and of his government of the people of Israel, it looks as if it was wrote by another, and after his death, though not long after, since the account is carried on no further than his times; and therefore it is probable enough it was written by Asaph, the chief singer, that lived in that age: whoever was the penman of it, it is certain he was a prophet, and so was Asaph, who is called a seer, the same with a prophet, and who is said to prophesy, 2 Chronicles 29:30 and also that he represented Christ; for that the Messiah is the person that is introduced speaking in this psalm is clear from Matthew 13:34 and the whole may be considered as a discourse of his to the Jews of his time; giving them an history of the Israelites from their first coming out of Egypt to the times of David, and in it an account of the various benefits bestowed upon them, of their great ingratitude, and of the divine resentment; the design of which is to admonish and caution them against committing the like sins, lest they should be rejected of God, as their fathers were, and perish: some Jewish writers, as Arama observes, interpret this psalm of the children of Ephraim going out of Egypt before the time appointed.
