who
1were born,
2not of blood
3nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.
14
And
4the Word
5became flesh and
6dwelt among us,
7and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of
8grace and
9truth.
15
(
10John bore witness about him, and cried out, “This was he of whom I said,
11‘He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me. ’”)
16
For from
12his fullness we have all received,
13grace upon grace.
17
For
14the law was given through Moses;
15grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
18
16No one has ever seen God;
17the only God, who is at the Father’s side,
18he has made him known.
The Testimony of John the Baptist
19 And this is the
19testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him,
20“Who are you? ”
20
21He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ. ”
21
And they asked him, “What then?
22Are you Elijah? ” He said, “I am not. ” “Are you
23the Prophet? ” And he answered, “No. ”
22
So they said to him, “Who are you? We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself? ”
23
He said, “I am
24the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord, ’ as the prophet Isaiah said. ”
