When I fed them, they were satisfied; when they were satisfied, they became proud;1 then they forgot2 me.3

So I will come upon them like a lion,4 like a leopard I will lurk by the path.
8
Like a bear robbed of her cubs,5 I will attack them and rip them open. Like a lion6 I will devour them; a wild animal will tear them apart.7

"You are destroyed, O Israel, because you are against me,8 against your helper.9

Where is your king,10 that he may save you? Where are your rulers in all your towns, of whom you said, 'Give me a king and princes'?11

So in my anger I gave you a king,12 and in my wrath I took him away.13

The guilt of Ephraim is stored up, his sins are kept on record.14

Pains as of a woman in childbirth15 come to him, but he is a child without wisdom; when the time16 arrives, he does not come to the opening of the womb.17

"I will ransom them from the power of the gravea;18 I will redeem them from death.19 Where, O death, are your plagues? Where, O grave,b is your destruction?20 "I will have no compassion,

even though he thrives21 among his brothers. An east wind22 from the LORD will come, blowing in from the desert; his spring will fail and his well dry up.23 His storehouse will be plundered24 of all its treasures.

The people of Samaria25 must bear their guilt,26 because they have rebelled27 against their God. They will fall by the sword;28 their little ones will be dashed29 to the ground, their pregnant women30 ripped open."
