See how the faithful city has become a harlot!1 She once was full of justice; righteousness2 used to dwell in her-- but now murderers!322
Your silver has become dross,4 your choice wine is diluted with water.
Your rulers are rebels,5 companions of thieves;6 they all love bribes7 and chase after gifts. They do not defend the cause of the fatherless; the widow's case does not come before them.824
Therefore the Lord, the LORD Almighty, the Mighty One9 of Israel, declares: "Ah, I will get relief from my foes and avenge10 myself on my enemies.1125
I will turn my hand against you;12 I will thoroughly purge13 away your dross14 and remove all your impurities.1526
I will restore your judges as in days of old,16 your counselors as at the beginning. Afterward you will be called17 the City of Righteousness,18 the Faithful City.19"
Zion will be redeemed with justice, her penitent20 ones with righteousness.2128
But rebels and sinners22 will both be broken, and those who forsake23 the LORD will perish.2429
"You will be ashamed25 because of the sacred oaks26 in which you have delighted; you will be disgraced because of the gardens27 that you have chosen.
You will be like an oak with fading leaves,28 like a garden without water.
The mighty man will become tinder and his work a spark; both will burn together, with no one to quench the fire.29"
