Look, their brave men8 cry aloud in the streets; the envoys9 of peace weep bitterly.
The highways are deserted, no travelers10 are on the roads.11 The treaty is broken,12 its witnessesb are despised, no one is respected.
The land mournsc13 and wastes away, Lebanon14 is ashamed and withers;15 Sharon16 is like the Arabah, and Bashan17 and Carmel18 drop their leaves.
"Now will I arise,19" says the LORD. "Now will I be exalted;20 now will I be lifted up.
You conceive21 chaff, you give birth22 to straw; your breath is a fire23 that consumes you.
The peoples will be burned as if to lime;24 like cut thornbushes25 they will be set ablaze.26"
You who are far away,27 hear28 what I have done; you who are near, acknowledge my power!
The sinners29 in Zion are terrified; trembling30 grips the godless: "Who of us can dwell with the consuming fire?31 Who of us can dwell with everlasting burning?"
He who walks righteously32 and speaks what is right,33 who rejects gain from extortion34 and keeps his hand from accepting bribes,35 who stops his ears against plots of murder and shuts his eyes36 against contemplating evil--
